Not to be too OT, but I finally had my first taste of Five Guys during a road trip from NYC to CHI last week. Having grown up in California and on In-N-Out, I have to say I was absolutely blown away by how much better Five Guys was--thick, meaty patties, great seasonings, and awesome thick, seasoned fries (especially when covered in malt vinegar). I enjoy In-N-Out on occasion, but the thin patties, overbearing tangy sauce, and wimpy, undercooked fries just don't compare to Five Guys.
Five Guys: Five Times as good as In-N-Out!(tm)

On a 2 week Fly-drive trip last year to California my wife and I try Jack In The Box for the first time and we got hooked on their Sirloin line of burgers, and for a fast food joint they were a great burger, but be for warned quality and taste of this premium burger varied greatly at different locations, the worst being Bakersfield & Long Beach and the best near San Jose & Carson City, Nev.

Ditto - I gave Five Guys a try after moving to the East Coast from California two years ago, and haven't looked back since!

Finally getting a chance to taste these burgers
Ok, my FT friends, I am heading to SD on Sept 26th for a week long "girls trip" celebrating our 50th bdays. My first stop is going to be In-N-Out burgers. Looks like there is only one in SD area, could this be true? In OK we have Whataburger, Carls Jr, Micky D's for fast food options. Can't wait to try this highly recommended burger. Update and review to follow. tee hee

Never been in "DiningBuzz!" before.. but I was scrolling down the list of forums and saw this was the latest topic.
Without reading all the pages.. I'll answer the main question.
Yes. Yes indeed. Without question. You can now close this thread. End of discussion.

There are 3 In and Outs in San Diego but there are more in the surrounding areas. Stay away from Whataburger YUCK.... Enjoy

Grew up in San Diego, we didn't get a In-N-Out until the early 90s, when they opened the first one. Before that my buddies and I would drive up to Mission Vijeo to go surfing then eat at In-n-Out.... Then in 97 moved to Phoenix, again no In-n-Out but I would fly home see the parental units and get my fix. Well today there are about 10 In-n-Outs iin the greater Phoenix area but don't eat much at In-N-Out (about once a month) but in next year moving to Tulsa, sigh..... No In-N-Out there....
I also miss Tommy Dogs.....

Yes, In-n-out burgers really are that good. It was a life-changing experience the first time I had them in college.
As for the fries, get them well done and animal style and then they are awesome too (if a bit artery clogging).
White castle and Five Guys are no comparison. I don't know why everybody likes Five Guys so much, the mushrooms they use on their burgers are straight out of a can! And the burgers are served in foil.
I can't wait to move back to California. In-n-out being one of the more major reasons of course.

Which is why "thumbs up, thumbs down" reviews don't help much in the absence of some sense of whether the reviewer has similar taste - works with your close friends, not so much with strangers. An OK review for unknown people gives a sense not just of whether you liked a place but why; a really GOOD one lets people get a sense of whether they'd like it or not independent of the reviewer's taste.

Is anyone is ready for a throw down 5 Guys vs. In N Out? I have found a city that features both chains. St. George, Utah (SGU) features both of thm within 2 miles of each other on River Road. Located 90 minutes north of Las Vegas, both chains do a brisk business. If you want to compare them side by side, this is the place to do it.

I'd die for an In-N-Out right now
I've been in Afghanistan for over 7 months already; at this point, I would die for an In-N-Out double double animal style, vanilla shake and fries
. You really don't appreciate the good things in life until they are taken away. In fact, the first thing I do when I land at LAX is to go to an In-N-Out, lol.
