BART ridership down 50% on Friday
OAKLAND, Calif. - BART ridership continues to plummet amid concerns about COVID-19, the transit agency said Saturday.
On Friday, ridership was 184,605 -- a 50 percent drop compared to 375,170 on an average Friday last month, BART officials said.

Earlier this week BART said revenues were down $600,000 a day. The farebox funds 60% of overall operations. Unless they expect a massive influx of federal money, something needs to give - route cuts, earlier closing times, maybe even eliminating weekend service. Any of those means layoffs.

Ridership down 61% for both Saturday and Sunday. Only 37,000 passengers on Sunday.

I just don't see how they can continue to operate full service with massive losses unless they have some assurances of a federal bailout. If they were losing $600,000 a day last week it must be close to $1 million a day now.

Just had an e-mail from Metro in DC on service cutbacks (they were also down 70% yesterday). They're going to 15 minute service on all lines and slight changes to operating hours, including an 11pm closing. Would be something for BART to look at. Buses are going to a Sunday schedule that will require 60% less employees.

87% passenger drop on Tuesday, March 17 - just over 54,000 passengers compared to a normal 399,000 . Still running full service.

Starting Thursday March 19, BART will temporarily eliminate the extra commute trains that run during the AM and PM commute on the Yellow (Antioch-SFO) line until further notice. The regular base schedule of 15-minute headways during commute hours will remain systemwide. The trains being cancelled are the extra trains that provide more frequent service during our busiest hours on our busiest line. These trains are traditionally cancelled during periods of low ridership, such as the December holiday season.
15 minute service matches Metro in DC. Took them a while to get to it.

Was union cooperation / negotiation required for service reductions? Perhaps that accounts for delay.

BART is taking swift action to reduce operating costs as ridership levels have declined by 90% as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and shelter in place orders. BART has done an exhaustive review of ridership and train car loads this week and will make the following changes to service until further notice:
Starting Monday, March 23, 2020, BART will provide service Monday-Friday from 5am-9pm (currently service is 5am-midnight). Current weekday train frequency will remain.
Starting Saturday March 28, 2020, Saturday and Sunday service will be from 8am-9pm (currently Saturday service is 6am-midnight and Sunday is 8am-midnight). Current weekend train frequency will remain.
All riders must be in the system by 8:45pm to have a guaranteed ride to their destination.
Starting Monday, March 23, 2020, BART will provide service Monday-Friday from 5am-9pm (currently service is 5am-midnight). Current weekday train frequency will remain.

The numbers just aren't there for riders after 9pm. They'd be carrying less than 1,500 passengers systemwide in that timeframe.
