Anyone gotten stung at the cash register on this? They seem to have gotten their act together on these coupon offers - the clerks used to destroy the coupons after scanning them; now they are required to retain them. So, I'm wondering whether the system can see if your Borders account has already had a specific coupon applied [during the period]?

Can't confirm this 100% but it wouldn't surprise me. They seemed to start the program with little thought to this duplication, but I know they noticed it early on, so they've probably taken steps to curb it. They have a nasty mix of IT stuff there with some really old infrastructure (the system the employees have to use at the info desk to try look up books is hopelessly limited by today's standards), but the Rewards program is in the point-of-sale which seems to be adaptable to something like catching coupon duplicates on a given Rewards account.

Borders' I T dept in action

If you do not have your card with you, the clerk can access your account via your (linked) telephone number; no area code field so the person selects your name from the available list of possibilities. However ...

If your phone# is not linked, and you do not have your card with you to scan, but you do have your Borders# available. the clerk cannot access your account. I ran across this once, and was told there was no way to enter the actual number at time of purchase; you'd need to claim retroactive credit online yourself.

Has anyone been able to combine a Borders Rewards "Personal Shopping Day" (i.e. 10% discount - good all day, earned when $50.00 is spent in one month) with any coupons?

Points Scrounger Oct 3, 2006 1:31 am

Recent experience with multiple coupons

Two books: $14.95 and $9.95
Two coupons: 30% (from once-per-promo period from web) and 20% (once per day from register for prior purchase). Each clearly specified $10 minimum.
Clerk readily agreed both were okay as combined purchase was over $20.
System automatically deducted 30% off higher priced book, and 20% off lower priced one. ^

Expires 9/24/06

This coupon is good thru 10/23 now!
I didn't notice the $10 purchase requirement but the cashier took it for a $6.99 paperback...

Using the above link (http://www.visitborders.com/index.php?c=A) , or googling Borders Coupons, leads to the 30% off coupon (good on one item with purchase of $10.00 or more). But the beauty of this particular coupon, is that it's good for six days after printing it. Print out the coupon today and it's good until Nov. 24.

No problem combining with a 30% off $10 coupon in Madison, and this was a clerk that is always lecturing me about the "1 coupon per promotion period" limit.
According to rules the "Personal Shopping Day" 10% discount can only be
combined with the "buy 3 get 1 free" type discounts that don't need a coupon,
so they will eventually train the clerks to disallow coupons with the personal shopping day.

I'll bring this up again

Has anyone gotten any guff about applying a coupon against a "special order" book. The rules state that's not possible, but it seems they'd be losing out to Amazon, etc. on this?

could not combine. in maryland.

Jhoc Oct 20, 2006 1:44 pm

I used it yesterday in MA. The clerk was shocked to see a coupon that did not require a rewards card and with such few restrictions. I did not combine it, but he did ask if I had any other coupons, which implied to me I could have if I had them.

The comment was made upthread that the coupon is good for 6 days after you print it, so since today is the 23rd, that makes sense. This is one of their better recent coupons, so I hope this one stays around for a long time.
