Unlike the US, airlines in Europe generally don't control gates or parts of the terminal where they operate from.

I've stopped using FR.
On LON-DUB trip I use EI. Heathrow is much cheaper for me to get to than STN. The net additional cost of EI over is usually only 10 per trip and the journey experience is much more pleasant.
For other trips in Europe, I will use U2. A loco who may not be quite as cheap as FR, but the service is better and they have fewer insane customer unfriendly policies.
FR will only convince me its changed when i MO'L retires and it changes some of its ancillary revenue policies.

If getting LHR is more convenient and cheaper than STD, then why would you even consider STD for the sake of 10?
Ryanair serves many areas that do not have the luxury of the multiple choices Londoners have, yet their fares are still cheap, even when they have a near-monopoly.
You certainly can't say the same about the heritage airlines before Ryanair took them on.

Ryanair aren't totally dependent on their handling agent (or the police) to let passengers into the terminal building at Stansted. The airside passes/id cards carried by Stansted based cabin crew and pilots will open the doors.
This flight was operated by Oporto based crew and they don't have the right cards to work the electronic locks. Either Swissport forgot this, was overwhelmed by the number of diverted flights, or have no contract with Ryanair for "out-of-normal-flight-times" work. I doubt if anyone will ever tell us which..

The appearance of Boots and their "meal deals" airside at most UK airports means even the skinniest and flintiest don't need to go hungry on a LCC. However, if I'm hungry enough, I don't really grudge paying extra for a sandwich onboard when I saved about 20x that on the fare.
But when the flight is less than an hour I'm fairly sure before I get on whether I'm going to be hungry or not.
FR cater for the millions who seem unable to make that simple decision.

flying from the UK sure. but I'm yet to find a boots or anything near equivalent in any EU airport apart from the Netherlands.
Many airports you'd actually find FR food cheaper.

Very good point. Cheapest airside drinks at BVA were in the region of 3.50 last time I was there, which was some time ago.
