Where is the new rail terminal going to be? Did I see the rail line under construction the other day along the road leading to SVO2? It seemed like they were building some sort of bridge-like thing. There were lots of concrete supports lying around as well.

From what I hear it's going to be directly in front of SVO2 (where one of the paring lots now is?).

For what it's worth, I flew into the new terminal earlier this week on an air astana flight from Almaty. There's not much to report... it was clean and pretty bare. I got through customs quickly and had no checked baggage.

New meaning SVO1, right?

More like Terminal C (see above).

I flew out of SVO1 three weeks ago and it was the same overcrowded mess. SU routes to LED on an Airbus 319, incidentally, seemed to pack a lot of ST Elite fliers, judging by the crowds in the lounge that later turned up flying in Y.

So does anyone have any idea when we can celebrate the closure / demolition of SVO2? When do LH move into a new terminal?

LH's contract with SVO expires in 2008. There's much talk in the Russian aviation community they'll switch to DME or even to VKO but they might as well stay at SVO, given all the money they sunk in their cargo/maintenance facilities there.

As to SVO2, it's much better than it was even a year ago. And they are not going to demolish it. As soon as Terminal A (SVO3) is ready, all the SkyTeam carriers will move over, freeing Terminal B (SVO2) for the likes of LH. Some reconstruction is in order as well, but still it's going to be a much more tolerable experience, with SU, AF and others gone and freeing up space. Shoud they stay at SVO2, LH is going to be the biggest airline at the terminal as well.

I definately agree. My experience in SVO2 has been MUCH better than it has been in years past. They've cleaned it up a lot and made it nicer. Passport control was even miraculously organized the last time I flew in. I may have gotten lucky, but it was much better than the lack of lines, push and shove that I had experienced each time before.

My recent experiences had been similr, but I had a couple of nightmares recently which took me back to the old SVO2 of a few years ago. 45 minutes to get through passport control and over an hour in immigration when arriving on the late LH MUC flight. They still have a bit of work to do, although I agree it's vastly better on average compared to a few years ago.

I'm just holding my breath until SVO3 opens. Is it on time?

I agree -- but you should have been there today when Aeroflot decided that it didn't like my electronic ticket (issued by Continental) and the ticketing supervisor refused to call Continental (or anyone else) and simply insisted on my purchasing a new ticket. They did the same for another passenger whose electronic ticket was issued by Swiss. Ahhh... "This is Russia!"

Whaaaaaaaat??? Did you have to do it? Amazing. I'm on a e-ticket in mid July and already nervous about it.

So, are we on time for a November opening of SVO3? I'm arriving from ATL on November 2 and so hoping we taxi up to the new terminal. I read somewhere recently (Russian Profile Magazine) that it was due to open in October but I seem to trust the November date more. Nothing happens early here.

Construction is supposed to be over by November but I'm not sure they'll open it like the next day or something. So I wouldn't hold my breath.

(Hell, I even saw a report that said the new terminal was due to be ready by November but to open in March 2008. Now that is something I don't really want to believe.)

Yes. It's a long story. They simply don't understand the details of electronic ticketing. I'll start a new thread on my experience in the next day or two.

I actually didn't know they're allowing (at least in theory) e-tickets now, though I heard it was in the works.
