Using QF FF points to upgrade on BA?

I wanted to know if I can use Qantas FF points to upgrade BA flights/ e.g. I am flying LHR SYD in WT+ and wanted to know is it possible (and if so how many points) to upgrade to CW?

Thanks a lot

Ansett767:- Welcome to FT (Au branch) ^ ^

You can only use QF points to upgrade QF flight numbers on QF metal.
Starallaince have a limited cross carrier upgrades with miles, buy nothing like that on Oneworld (QF-BA-etc)

oh, by the way I read on another part of the forum that you can in fact use QF FF points to upgrade QF codeshared flights.

Does this mean that I could use the points on BA metal, from LHR to SYD, because it also has a QF codeshare flight number?

If so how would it work (no. of points from Premium Econ to Bus? as QF doesn't offer this product yet)

Not sure where you read this, but this is not possible either, unless Qantas is flying the plane.

To upgrade, you need to be flying on a Qantas Flight Number on Qantas Metal. Codeshares don't count unfortunately.

In a word -- no. It must be QF points on QF metal. Get in quick - the request for upgrade window opens 90 days prior and if you have high status, you trump those with lower status.

If you have no status and your are flying a popular route (SYD-LAX/SFO, SYD-SIN/BKK-LHR) then chances of the upgrade coming through are quite slim.

But that would just mean the number of people fighting for the upgrades will be much higher. I am happy to know I have a reasonable shot at upgrades on two airlines while I maintain status with those two OneWorld airlines. If I had to compete with millions of AA, BA, CX etc members, then my chances are likely to be worse overall.

There was talk a few years back that OW was going to introduce just this type of benefit (and this was before Star publicly announced the concept) although for some reason nothing further happened.

Not really. It works well on *A which is a much bigger alliance with even more elites.
The secret is the number of seats available. On OneWorld only a very limited number of seats are available for upgrades and awards. This is why we all have to book 11 months in advance.
On *A you will now find plenty of availability in Y, J or even F from Australia to Europe in April and May. And it is similar with the upgrade request which can be made straight after you have booked your ticket (not sure about the exact time limits).

*A alliance upgrades are limited to the highest fares, and tend to be fairly expensive (compared with awards). This dampens demand - but it is nice to know the option is there.

True but first preference would be given to the person who is a member of the relevant carrier so it would be no different for you only if you were from another program and there were seats left you could take advantage of it.

And the number for upgrade seats available on the long QF flights won't change. They regularly sell all their J seats, so none left for upgrades.

QF Upgrades availabe at airports only?

Sorry for my ignorance, but can you get confirmed upgrades 90 days ahead of flight? I was told by QF a few weeks ago that all QF FF Upgrades are now on "standby" basis, i.e. only done at the airport on day of travel. She claimed this has been the new rule for about a couple of years now. Have about 100k QF miles (mostly earned on BA/AA/JAL) and was surprised to hear this.
Again, sorry if this is old news to you guys, but was just wondering what the upgrade time window is
