The secret is the number of seats available. On OneWorld only a very limited number of seats are available for upgrades and awards. This is why we all have to book 11 months in advance.
On *A you will now find plenty of availability in Y, J or even F from Australia to Europe in April and May. And it is similar with the upgrade request which can be made straight after you have booked your ticket (not sure about the exact time limits).
And the number for upgrade seats available on the long QF flights won't change. They regularly sell all their J seats, so none left for upgrades.
