Seat Availability
I probably know that that the answer to this is no, but worth an ask of you fine people anyway.
I'm looking at booking a flight from LHR to SYD on or around the 8th of january, is there anyway of finding out whether or not any seating is available on the upper deck? (Yes, I'm one of those people who prefer the upper deck - so please, no "I wouldn't bother" responses please!
)
I know that once a booking is made through checkmytrip you can see the seat map and availability, but I assume theres no way to do this without a valid booking?

Just signed up for that expertflyer website, very cool. Anybody know how "accurate" the reflected maps are?
The 8th is when I'm looking to go, I prefer QF32 because it means I land, head to the hotel and crash out! (used QF32 before!). The 9th would be better for personal reason, but the upper deck is rammed!
Yeah, the exit rows are blocked, try any date and they show as unavailable. I guess that my gold status isn't enough to unlock them either.

The only way to have row 16 allocated is to call Qantas and ask. If you hold sufficient status, the res agent can send a request to the seating allocation dept and you should have it confirmed or denied within 24 hours. So if you like the upper deck, then its worth the few minutes for the phone call.

You're not joking, just booked my flight, phoned up qantas straight afterwards to put in my seat request then immediately checked expertflyer and it shows me sitting there!

Another quick question, but OT from my original posting...
I have to fly 4 "Sectors" to keep status, what exactly do they class as a sector? I'm on QF32 & QF31, does this count as 2 sectors or 4? (by virtue of stopping in singapore)

It counts as 2 sectors, not 4, in case QF ever starts to enforce that rule. Basically a sector is a QF flight number/date; so you have to change flight numbers at SIN/BKK/HKG to get another sector. It also affects the mileage and SC calculation (you get more by changing flights).
