If you hold sufficient status, the res agent can send a request to the seating allocation dept and you should have it confirmed or denied within 24 hours. So if you like the upper deck, then its worth the few minutes for the phone call.
Note to the OP though; in order to be able to get an exit row pre-assigned it is necessary to have QF Platinum status, Gold status will not manage it
