Lounge access can be obtained either through status, or by purchasing a Qantas Club membership. There are quite a few threads here with information so a quick search should answer all your questions. If you have no status and are planning travel on QF, BA and AA in the near future, it could be quite handy to have.

But of course I won't have a card to prove it until I return home. Will the QF systems be able to verify my status and allow me access? Of course I won't exactly die of deprivation if it can't happen, but it would be nice.

Uh I believe if you show your same day international BP stub you should get access to the domestic QC in SYD/ADL as an international business class passenger. Normally domestic business class passengers don't get lounge access (unless they are a QC member or have appropriate status) however if you are making a direct connection eg: LAX-SYD-ADL, ADL-SYD-LAX you can use the domestic lounges at those airports. ADL QC is really nice in the new terminal. HP on tap rocks!

Have just spoken to reception staff at SYD T3, and they tell me that as long as you can produce a J boarding pass for an international flight on a oneworld carrier IN to SYD, then QP access will be available for the domestic flight, even if on a domestic sector, whether it is on a seperate PNR or not. Presumably, this will apply to other QP's around the country, so keep your boarding passes.
