QF99 on 13 Oct19

I have noticed on the Qantas website QF99 departing Syd on 13 Oct 19 @ 5pm, arriving LAX 12.50pm same day, and is being operated by a 747-400. Would anyone know if this particular aircraft is being retired?

Some great posts on various Twitter pages of the final flight and how she will be a future testbed for RR engines.

Nice to see all the excitement.

And a great article here with lots of other photos including cabin, engines, the crew of the ferry flight, and a RR silver trophy to commemorate the hand-off

Perhaps they will also use it to transport engines before / after repair given some of the Rollers on the 787s have been such a PITA.

Who else is booked on QF99 on 9th Feb on VH-OEF? I am in seat 36K for now. Any idea if Qantas will release further award seats in Business for other FFPs nearer departure date? I am using Alaska miles.

Update: Mon 13 Jan 00.00 GMT. Availability in Business popped up online at midnight on Alaska. Whilst holding on the phone to Mileage Plan just before 01.00am someone had already booked it and I was unable to secure it.

Tues 14 Jan 20:37 GMT, alert on Expertflyer notified me of another potential seat on QF99. Bearing in mind that seats were previously available via BA Executive Club and not to Mileage Plan members I wasn't sure of availability until I checked online at Alaska. Sure enough there was. Phoned again through to Mileage Plan, paid $125 change fee and extra $2.50 in taxes, redeemed additional 7,500 miles and now I am rebooked in Business. Also secured last remaining window seat on the upper deck - 16K.

I am wondering when Qantas will remove the 747 from SYD-JNB still showing 747 in November 2020.

As an armchair expert ... I reckon it’ll be the last route to use the 744 - or at least until “sunrise” aircraft appear. I’ve read elsewhere that it is reckoned the 787 can’t operate with desired leadings JNB-SYD due to hot and high conditions at JNB. If forced, QF could always operate JNB-PER.
