It appears US citizens can transit Algeria without a visa for up to 24 hours.

************

Visa exempt for a stay of up to 24 hours. The traveler must:
  • Hold a passport valid for at least 6 months on entry with one blank visa page
  • Hold proof of sufficient funds
  • Hold proof of onward/return flights
  • Hold all documents required for the next destination
  • Hold visa for next country where applicable
  • Confirm with their airline that boarding will be permitted without a visa
Should the traveler not meet the above criteria, a visa may be required. Please contact VisaCentral for further advice at 877-535-0688

The exact wording from TIMATIC is

Code:
TWOV (Transit Without Visa):
- Passengers with a confirmed onward ticket for a flight to a
third country within 24 hours. They must stay in the
international transit area of the airport and have documents
required for the next destination.
- TWOV does not apply to passengers with a travel document
issued by the Palestinian Territory.
"Third country" suggests a back-to-back same plane turnaround would be impermissible.

Agreed. Sounds similar to the China TWOV rule, except you can’t leave the airport.

There is still a workaround that would be valid. There are two methods on Oneworld to get to ALG one is LGW - ALG and there is MAD to ALG as long as you positioned with one and started your trip with the other you will be fine. Caveat being though that I'm sure the LGW to ALG would be too close to the leaving flight. Less than 60 mins last time I checked. You can also position from CDG on star alliance which would be valid for travel without visa also

I wouldn’t normally ask this, but as I’m in the jungles of Nicaragua with limited connectivity, does anyone know if this is still available?

if so, I’ll try and find a hard connection somewhere to book.

FWIW, thinking May-June

Yes still available, Just checked five minutes ago and fully available on IB codes, Cant see a ticket by date on ITA though so it can obviously be pulled at any time

IB also has flights from BCN and VLC, though not every day.

Curious about this--did you apply for a single entry visa and they gave you a multiple entry one instead? Or something else and for what cost?

your itinerary as written, requires 3 tickets
1. ALG-LHR/MAD/BCN-JFK
2. JFK-LAX/SFO-JFK
3. JFK-LAX/SFO-JFK
1. JFK-LHR/MAD/BCN-ALG

you could achieve a similar result with just 2 tickets, if you don’t mind hitting the US west coast first
1. ALG-LHR/MAD/BCN-LAX-JFK
2. JFK-LAX/SFO-JFK
1. JFK-LAX-LHR/MAD/BCN-ALG

The AA fare permits domestic end-on-end, so I think the flights could be plated on one ticket.

Wouldn’t be any cheaper than several tickets though.

Actually to be honest I can't remember what we asked for- but I remember being pleasantly surprised that we got the multiple entry, 2 year visas.
It made the price tag (incl Visa agent in NYC) more palatable for us.
