$50 and a visit to Singapore, Bangkok, etc will get you 2 perfect duplicate TSA costumes, badges and all.

FWIW, I thought the old uniforms were far more professional. The new ones (and the badges) make the TSA people look like rent-a-cops.

Perhaps as a society, we should all just bestow titles upon ourselves in an effort to command respect. Never mind that both titles and respect are usually earned, let's all give ourselves a false sense of deserving the bowing and scraping of others.

How about these:

Master Fryer Supervisor

Chief of Hub Cap Shining

Resident Stationary Engineer (Flinstones, anyone?)

The Duke of Ted

Colonel of the Mens Room

Lord of the Lawnmower (Do You Want Your Grass Cut?!?)

General BarFly

Queen of Afternoon Television Loss Prevention and Quality Assurance

Forgot one:

Real Man of Genius :D

How does the old addage go? You can't polish a turd.

You can put a new uniform on a rent-a-cop, but he's still a rent-a-cop. Mall security guards have badges and nice uniforms too. Even the mall in my hometown calls their security the "Galleria Police"

Another original design concept back in 2002 was standard BDU-style pants and jacket combo, only in flat gray instead of camouflage. It would have been the ultimate in utilitarian design choices, comfortable to wear and to keep clean, made for the physical work we have to do, but I'm guessing it was decided that it would have presented the wrong image to the public ;)

Haha, I was joking at work that at least we don't look like this:

Otherwise, the TSA's attrition rate would be through the roof. ;)

Where did they show off these prototypes Dean?

Actually, I had a previous cleaner "misplace" some shirts for about a month. It caused me a lot of grief. I had to call the cleaner regularly for updates about their "investigation," and I had to report the problem to the AFSD-LE and the FSD. They made some changes to the way they tracked and controlled orders shortly after I reported the problem. (I suspect the changes were related to my report.) I also had several of the higher-ups strongly suggest I find a new cleaner. (Which led me to the Albanian woman, so everything worked out in the end.)

I drop off the clothes and pick them up a few days later, just like anyone else.

I used the wrong word. "Prototype" suggests that they actually made some and gave them a test run. To be far more accurate, they were early-stage design concepts; like a number of cards or something with concept drawings that the then-Administrator/uniform committee/whatever chose from for the uniform design to move to the next step in choosing the final outfit.

Which turned out to be a bus driver uniform from VF Solutions, with some TSA patches sewn on.

As Bob said on the TSA Blog:

The uniforms we wore weren’t the greatest...

I thought that colour blue looked familiar.... I stopped by McDogfood's tonight (practically no restaurants still serving food in Tampa after 11pm ) and if I didn't know any better, I thought they had TSA smurfs working there! No fake badge nor ungodly-large patches on them, but they are indeed the same shade blue! Sorry, no pic, would have taken one if the Blackberry 8830 had a cam on it.

True professionals screen bags and people wearing plain white shirts (maybe even knit shirts) and dark trousers. Like in most other countries.

Loser organizations like the TSA constantly fuss over their uniforms' appearance and the message it conveys in a desperate attempt to extract respect from the public it abuses.

Sorry, TSA, you can put lipstick on the pigs and it ain't foolin' anyone. The organization is still a pig. Doesn't matter how cop-like you dress them with shoulderboards, tin badges, oversized patches and the like.

Your description is no longer correct. Through the magic of Checkpoint Evolution™, TSA* has upgraded to gold plated tin badges. Please use the proper respectful metallic terms when describing the uniform of our Tailored Smurf Officers.

Unless you believe that old saying McCain Obama somebody said "You can put gold on a tin badge, but it's still only a worthless tin badge something so tacky few people have the chutzpah to wear one in public."
;)

*TSA, the only organization in the world run by Creationists who call every gradual small change they make "Evolution™".

What, exactly, is a "US Officer"?

They couldnt fit Unconstitutional Stupidity 'Officer' on they're new cereal box toy badges.

Oh my! Now that is SERIOUSLY bad! :p

Well, it's already starting at my airport. TSOs, for some reason, strenuously object to wearing the goofy ties that now are required only with the long-sleeved shirts. When this policy came out, I predicted everyone would take to wearing only short-sleeved shirts in order to avoid the tie, which has proven correct. However, now that the weather is turning chilly, some of my co-workers are resorting to wearing their sweater vests over their short-sleeved shirts, which looks extremely ghey. Oy!

Scubatooth Sep 21, 2008 3:11 pm

oh after looking at the new badges, all i can think of is a line from blazing saddles. Oh yeah doing to those badges was a total power play and lame attempt to try and get some more respect. only problem is that TSA has garnered so much ill will that they will never earn any. remember you earn respect....you get common courtesy. and only that if your professional.

I sent a copy of the image to a friend of mine in the phillipines and he said that they could have exact replicas made and ready in 1 day.

Yup, just like them losing their minds over missing clown suits. A good tailor in Bangkok/Singapore/lots of other places can bang out a smurfy replica that will look the same as the authentic costume. The sensationalist little patch with its pathetic reference to 9/11 is as easily duplicated.
