An otherwise tawdry story is rescued by the line "Whyte, who is black..." ^

Think that's his real name, lol?

Should an FA take the cigarette out of a pax mouth? Clearly smoking is a huge offense and should result in prosecution. But is he supposed to rip the butt right from between the lady's lips? Seems a little aggressive to me. I don't know what the manual calls for in this case.

How aggressive it was depends on the "lady's" behaviour up to that point. There is some issue of timeliness in the FA gaining control over flaming material if the aircraft is at cruising altitude.

On a recent AA transatlantic flight a FA snatched and dumped my tray while I was still eating the meal on it (loaded fork in midair), so perhaps there is some type of training on this.

Mrs. White, my Grade 7 math teacher, was black…

Strange story. Whyte is black. Ladi is the brother. She lit up while seated, then in the lav? And being drunk is her excuse.

Are those cuffs easy to break through? I wouldn't think so. She must have been completely jacked. Scary for the other pax.

I hope you reported that FA! Sheesh.

No, they're not. May not have been correctly applied the first time, or (rare) defective. "Completely jacked" sounds about right.

Thanks. Should have, but I was on the last leg of a 36-hr, half-way-round-the-world trip and forgot to get her name. A nice Russian pen I'd picked up got dumped along with my food. When I complained about losing that, she brought me a Bic from the galley that had toothmarks on it!

I only fly AA infrequently. AA FFs I know rave about their service, so either this was an anomaly, or I have much higher standards.

I don't know what the manual calls for in this case.

Contrary to popular belief, the Travel Safety/Security Forum isn't just about bashing the TSA. Or just about the airlines.

It's about all things related to safety and security while traveling.

So this thread does have a relevance to this forum and we'll let it continue as long as it stays on topic.

Flaming material ? Bit of hyperbole there, it was a cigarette.
...telling her she was endangering the other passengers.

Would you expect a FA to pick up a fire? No. I would expect the FA to try to put out a fire. Given the size of the fire pouring water on it should do the job.

And a cigarette isn't a fire?

Not an open fire, no it isn't; and it takes a big stretch* to claim it as "flaming material". I've never seen flames coming out of a cigarette, well except briefly if the wrong end is lit .

* unless one is in the cult, in which case I suppose it's not a stretch at all

What if a person had one these

http://www.crown7.com/

or this

http://www.njoythefreedom.com/cgi-bi...cgi/index.html

What would be SOP for it since your not exactly smoking on the plane.
Would the TSA freak out when they saw it going thru the Xray.

Just because it's not an open fire doesn't mean it's not a fire.

Personally, I think it should be legal to take reasonable measures to put out such fires in areas they are not permitted.

Exactly! "Reasonable measures" in air/at sea are stronger than on land, where
1) there's usually an option to stand around at a safe distance gawking at the conflagration until
2) fire trucks arrive.

A cigarette ash knocked into the crevice of a seat can smolder for a long time, then flash into major fire under the right conditions (like a high-oxygen environment). Plenty of older aircraft are still flying whose interiors give off toxic fumes when on fire, too. This is one situation I'd rather see a FA overreact, than underreact.

AC 797 managed to land, and still people died. I miss the music Stan Rogers never got a chance to make.
