Behavior detection should be:
I do not think the TSA can accomplish the above and I don't care if they are the only ones stepping up to the plate. If it can't be done correctly, it shouldn't be done at all.
- 100% transparent to passengers. In other words, don't talk to me without a really good reason for doing so.
- Nearly false-positive free. Even a 1% false positive rate is grossly unacceptable.
- Completely free of any prejudice
- Come out of the existing security budget. No additional funds should be allocated for behavior detection; instead stupidity should be trimmed from the existing budget (though I doubt Idiot Boy Hawley knows anything about budgeting)

I'm all for it if it means getting rid of the 'yellers'!
I had to work on a lane with a 'yeller' today -- you know, the guy who repeatedly shouts "Keep your boarding passes out! All shoes and coats must come off! Laptops outta the bag!" Over and over and OVER! About drove me nucking futz!

They are not doing behavior detection - they are combining a short intro class with guessing, silly questions and prejudice.
We need to get the rest of their house in order before we start looking at fancy extras - the meat and potatoes need to be fixed, like better checked and carry-on baggage scanning with on-the-fly liquid scanning, non-invasive full body scanning with chemical trace analysis, cargo screening, proper staffing levels, and a better attitude.
Get the A, B, Cs fixed before you start looking for X,Y,Zs to play with.

But I don't think the airport is the place to be looking.....the looking needs to start long before the person gets to the airport.

On another topic, can anybody tell me why the media has not picked up on all the anti-TSA sentiment that has appeared on the blog? Is it because the media, too, is afraid to be seen as "soft on terror" or because lots of pressure is being put on them to not report the growing displeasure with the TSA and their tactics?
It astounds me that I've not seen anything in the press since the inception of the blog.

Correct. I mentioned it in the thread about a day of No ID flying as well. The media refuses to ask real questions or report real information any more. Look at how many news outlets are just using packaged reports from companies as their news stories every night. When the TSA hands them a gift wrapped press kit and story they will report it because it is easy and good for Amerika. When they have to start asking real questions and then get "SSI" for every answer the report isn't nearly as pretty nor easy to put together. So they don't bother.

Although the TSA has designed the new checkpoint, it will not pay for airports to adopt the lights, soundtracks, counters and other features not used to screen passengers. "If it achieves its objectives, we'll market it, and the airports and airlines will pay," Hawley said.
The TSA will pay for new security equipment such as screener headsets and possibly bin-return machines.

The comments on the blog seem to echo our concerns... is this a proposal or will this actually be coming true? I can't imagine all our checkpoints would be suddenly transformed this year.
Also, the mural wall would block the checkpoint from public view, if I read that correctly.
I also hate this statement by Kip:

I feel somewhat sickened. I usually try to support TSA, to see their side, but even this is going a bit too far.

I work for the Federal goverment and I am so embarrassed. Kip Hawley must have a relative that is in the the mood enhancing business. I thought this was a April fools joke and that Kip forgot March had 31 days and put it out one day early.
