Middle Initial doesn't work anymore...
Hi all,
I tried to find an appropriate thread to put this in but I didn't see one started and the search function of FlyerTalk really stinks.
So I have found myself on the "Selectee" list since November of 2004. Since then, I learned to put my middle initial in all reservations and I would no longer be on the Selectee list.
Now, since about 3 weeks ago, even putting my middle initial in the reservation doesn't keep me from being a "Selectee". What is going on and what can I do to fix it?
I know I can fill out all of that BS PVI documentation from TSA -- but that doesn't get me off the list (ok, fine). All I care about is being able to check in on-line and stream-lining the process, but filling out that documentation doesn't take care of that - so what's the point in filling out the paperwork?
I'd rather force the agents to call TSA or whoever it is they call to clear me everytime I fly - maybe TSA will get the point! I fly 4-8x a month.
Maybe this is more of a frustration relief post than anything...but has anyone had luck with this?
Also, I came through Customs in Detroit awhile back and the Immigration officer told me that my name does not appear on any list for TSA or any foreign government. He had that information available to him on his screen - yet I am stopped every single time I fly!
Any thoughts or suggestions are helpful.
Thanks,
-RM

You might try using your middle name and last name? Perhaps a different credit card? First initial + middle name + last name? You might take out a different credit card using your middle name and last name and see what happens. Anything is worth a try.
It's really, really pitiful. I absolutely loathe the mediocrity in government that causes this to happen to people like you. You'll probably spend the rest of your flying life justifying your innocence to our government -- what's wrong with that picture???

This is the "Selectee" list by TSA that is one of their two "Watch Lists". This is not SSSSS. I only get the SSSS in "normal" situations like buying a one-way ticket.
About using a different credit card...didn't think the credit card had anything to do with it? But ironically enough, my NW flights tomrw are not letting me check-in. This is the first time on NW since I've been using my middle initial that it's stopped me - and ironically also the first time I'm using a new credit card for this ticket.
I also have a complex itinerary for tomorrow so I'm hoping maybe that's causing it this one time.
But flying America West last week with my middle initial got me flagged on the Watch List.

Could that be the case with you, too? Maybe that affects things?
I agree that this is un-American (in the classic sense) nonsense.

Try booking your reservation with "Bob" or "Bobby" as your first name.
I know a Robert Brown who's on the list, and while his full name will trigger a false match, booking as "Bob Brown" or "Bobby Brown" (like the singer
) will allow him to check in online or at a kiosk unharassed...again, showing the stupidity of the whole no-fly list. He could do the same, of course, if he were the real Robert Brown the government is looking for.
