what to do with a knife?

I think (Chunk) your basic idea of carrying a knife for protection is pretty mistaken. It sounds like even you don't believe it would stop a determined attacker/mugger (who wouldn't hesitate) and you don't know if it's legal.
(My point about legality is not necessarily about morality but getting arrested/assaulted as a result is a risk in itself).

My suggestion is that if the knife is that important to you, you should be willing to put up with a bit more hassle at the carousel. That is, check it with your bag. If you're not willing to check the bag, the knife must not be so important.
Otherwise I'd be taking the chinatown bus (at least the roads are still free, for now).

Ditch the knife and move to a city and/or neighborhood where you won't feel the need to carry a knife everywhere you go.
I've lived in Chicago twice, Baltimore, Boston, Detroit and currently in the LA area and have never once felt the need to carry a weapon. Plus I've traveled to many of the world's tough spots...Bangkok, Hong Kong, Moscow and Newark, NJ
...and have avoided trouble by not cruising the mean streets.
You need to get somewhere safe and sane as soon as you can arrange it.

One time I accidentally left my knife in my carry-on in CLT and they didn't notice. That was weird walking around the airport and boarding a plane with a really prohibited item (only step below a gun). On the return, I didn't want to check my carry-on, so I "accidentally" left it in my carry-on, but this time the TSA found it, so I had to check my backpack.
