Flights Halted at LAX after LAPD Officer Breaches Security
American Airlines flights were halted and passenger screening was stopped for 15 minutes at LAX on Saturday after an off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officer caused a security breach at a terminal.
(snip)
...the officer, on temporary assignment to LAX, was escorting family members to a gate in Terminal 4 when he flashed a LAX-issued badge and bypassed the security screening himself. American Airlines is the main tenant in Terminal 4.

"We don't want this to be blown out of proportion," Nancy Castles of Los Angeles World Airports, told the newspaper. "This is an administrative issue, which will be followed up by the LAPD."
Castles refused to name the officer, who was temporarily assigned to the airport. It was unclear if the officer would be disciplined.

It's unknown how many flights were delayed as a result of the 10:45 a.m. incident or how many passengers were inconvenienced, said Nancy Castles, spokeswoman for Los Angeles International Airport.
Castles declined to identify the officer involved or whether he faces disciplinary action for causing what she described as "not a serious ruckus."

This whole thing sounds way out of porportion.
So the cop is assigned to the airport. Mon-Fri he walks around armed. Sunday he (as cops are supposed to be) is armed when off duty and is now a threat to aviation security? Pathetic. At least they didn't dump the terminal.
The only issue I see that could be a problem is the cop -- unticketed -- was allowed to escort family members to the gate. As a normal Joe Citizen, I have to kiss them good bye at the security checkpoint. I see that all the time at DCA too; well-dressed Feds meeting family members at the gate when normal people have to wait for them after the leave the security area.

If something is going to happen in the sky again, it will be because of the double-standards in security that are in place now.
Only THEN will the TSA open up their eyes.
Sad how aviation and aviation secuirty have been so re-active.
