His discussion regarding various sizes of bottles was, I guess, merely an unsolicited attempt to "ratify" these rules on behalf of those people who made these rules. I'm sure irishguy28 was not in any way defending these rules.

As having been pointed out by vbroucek:
question about the stupidity of this regulation per se is something completely different...
Just to add to the question: what if the OP has frozen the solution? is it still considered liquid?

My point was that the size of the container wasn't what the security screener was interested in. It was the size that was written on the side of the container and nothing else.

Had I sufficient motivation I could have easily doctored the label on my wifes 120ml moisturiser to read 100ml.

They threatened to confiscate my soft cheese at MAN T3 unless it was in a resealable bag (which they only too willing to sell for 1!)

I think you are interpreting the screener wrongly. Or, their expression is not very precise. What they (should have) meant is that:
1. the volume of the container matters, not the amount of content;
2. they can establish the volume of the container by the printing on the container.

Should you label a 1L container with "98mL", I'm sure they will argue that this is not the "actual" volume of the container.

But if a 120mL is "authentically" labelled 98mL, I guess it will pass the screening without a problem.

Same with DUS and FRA. Any less-solid food stuff (e.g. lasagne, mashed potato, etc.) requires a "Can I open it?" check. One time I made sure to add enough garlic.

I was once confiscated a fork at WAW.

Could have been worse; you could have been sent for backscatter X ray with no opt-out.

As we know, the contact lens solution will lose all explosive properties if poured into two separate 60ml bottles!

Firstly, my eye doctor told me not to decant the fluid into other bottles. Contact lens liquid is sterile, and the cap is designed to keep it that way. If you fill it into another bottle you risk it loosing it's sterility.

Secondly, not all brands are sold in small bottles. I use AO Sept, which is not available under 100ml. I have had serious issues with other cleaning fluids such as ReNu. Unfortunately, I have no choice for some airports as I refuse to check luggage. For quite some time already, I have been alternating what I take with me depending on the airports I go through.

It would be very useful to have a "redlist" of airports confiscating contact solution over 100ml versus those that don't. (Greenlist?)

I also think somebody should take this topic on and do something. There should be transparency in the rules, with an explicit exception for contact lens liquid and consistency in application of the rules at all airports of the world that apply liquid restrictions.

Here my "redlist":

Amsterdam
All of UK
Brussels
Belgrade

"Greenlist":

All of Switzerland, Germany and Austria
Paris CDG
Ljubljana
Zagreb
Warszaw

Maybe we can build a comprehensive list together.

...which reminds me of the pack I bought yesterday at MAN (Boots after security), which consisted in: 2 X 60ml bottles, 2 cases and even a transparent plastic bag - all for a just a fiver!

I've never had any issues at AMS and also in the UK (my experience is limited to MAN, LHR & LGW, though). At WAW I forgot to take the plastic bag out of my hand luggage more than once and they never noticed it

Interesting. At least in Australia, I quickly found at least two retailers who sell AO Sept in value pack, consisting of two 360ml bottles and one (1) 90ml bottle. I would be surprised if CIBA did not offer similar elsewhere...

I doubt that there will be a reliable list, as it will ultimately depend on the screener of the day. I took contact lens fluid through Singapore security approximately 100 times (I used to live there) and on the 101st attempt it was confiscated. No arguing (including with the supervisor) helped...... From the 102nd time onwards I was OK again.....

*sigh*
Is that contact lens solution or are you just glad to see me?!

(Couldn't resist.)

But I have the same inconsistency issue with small hair trimming scissors (blade/fulcrum under 4"/6cm) which became legal in NAmerica, the UK and EU in the past year or two. (Still not sure about most of Asia.) At CDG they still claim these are not permitted and confiscate them. (Fortunately I've found a shop in Singapore where I can buy them at S$4 a pair!)

Since this thread is no longer really about Miles & More (Lufthansa, Austrian, Swiss, and other partners) I'm moving it to the more apt section of FT for more traction.

Flexible spending accounts cover contact lens solution - how can people say it's not medical?

Obatzda gets through just fine at MUC.

Clear Care (which I use interchangeably with Aosept) is available in 3 oz sizes (90 ml), and I travel with them all the time without issue.

Example:

http://www.amazon.com/Ciba-Vision-Cl...dp/B004GBB8E6/

I believe they can be found cheaper elsewhere. I've even purchased them on ebay.
