Global Entry problems at LAX?

Hello,
I am wondering if anyone had problems with the Global Entry kiosk at LAX?

I have used it twice since December 2010 at LAX and both times I had problems.

First time, they told me that the kiosk might be malfunctioning and they checked my credentials manually.

The second time, they told me that I would also have to scan my Green Card in addition to the passport. Thought the process does not allow for both items to be scanned.

What are other user experiences with Global Entry?

What terminal at LAX?
I've only used the ones at TBIT and never had any issues, but the last time was in November 2010 and I'm a US citizen not a green card holder.

I went through TBIT.

I will fly out later this week and return end of March - hopefully this time around go smoother as it takes twice as long if you have to discuss issues with the Border Patrol at the kiosk booth.

Any experiences from other users?

Always wondered why US Citizens who have a valid US passport need to "sign up" to a separate system to gain entry to their own country. Why aren't all US citizens allowed to use the automated kiosks wherever available?

Australia and NZ manage to implement the "Smartgate" automated entry system into the two countries for both Australian and NZ citizens; all you need is an ePassport to use them.
