Always wondered why US Citizens who have a valid US passport need to "sign up" to a separate system to gain entry to their own country. Why aren't all US citizens allowed to use the automated kiosks wherever available?

Australia and NZ manage to implement the "Smartgate" automated entry system into the two countries for both Australian and NZ citizens; all you need is an ePassport to use them.
