Requirements to EXIT the US?
Pardon my ignorance, but it's been forever since I flew International. My question is this: What exactly do you have to do (customs, ICE), if anything, when leaving the US? Also, Where does this take place? Specifically, I am flying PHL-JFK, then a short (1 hr.) layover in JFK, then on to IST. Is the 1 hour comfortable? Do I need to clear anything in JFK or PHL? Thanks for any help.

Hi,
Nothing to clear at all. The thing to worry about most, IMHO, would be weather or other delays affecting your PHL-JFK flight.
The only indication you may find of actually leaving the US is a potential document check at your boarding gate in JFK, but that's about it (to make sure you have a passport, and that, if you are a visitor on a visa, they collect that I94 stub).

the airline will make sure that your docs are ok for the destination, if not, you wont get on.....if you arr w/o the docs needed, the carrier is in trouble iirc....good luck

I can think of only three instances when you would have exit procedures:
1) turning in your I94 stub if applicable
2) completing NSEERS departure procedures if applicable
3) declaring currency if you are taking more than the equivalent of US$10,000 out of the country

They will check your documents to make sure you have the proper paperwork for where you are visiting. If you for example need a visa and don't have one, they will not let you board.
That will happen when you check in.
As to the hour, if you are ontime, if you can check in to both flights, if you don't have to reclear security at jfk because of a terminal change and all that you will be OK, but even if everything goes 100% right, it's still cutting it tight.
If there's an option for more time I would take that.

Thanks... I think I should be OK, I'm a US Cit. w passport (no I94), no NSEERS and no where near $10K! Thanks
