FTers and incidents

Randy,

I don't even know if this is feasible, technically/technologically/legally possible, or something you want to spend time on.

But the DL5191 incident got me thinking (and I PMed a very helpful mod about this)... should FT have a way for members, should they want to, register their real names in case something should happen to one of us? It would help confirm whether or not a member was involved, and at least give everyone the knowledge of such.

What I'm thinking of is providing our real names, have this info accessible only to appropriate FT management in case of incidents like DL5191, and giving FT our explicit permission to inform the forum in case of involvement (upon confirmation, of course).

Thanks for hearing me out.

I think real names should be give regardless of "incidents". Several of the mods have my real name and a few know me in person. Providing real names cuts down on hit-and-run type trolls, and also gives confidence to the mods that those who may "appear" to be trolls aren't really trolls at all, but people who have a different view/slant on things. This is especially beneficial to those who aren't into all the Political Correctness that seems to abound here. Also, if you are an InsideFlyer subscriber, then your real name and contact info has been provided.

Fortunately for me, FlyerTalk is the very first bulletin board which I ever read, and to which I ever posted. I was immediately fascinated by the concept of a worldwide internet-based community, and the intelligence, wit and caring of those other few original posters. We quickly became very real to one another on line and, after a few months, I too began to wonder how we would know if one of us died?

Since then, many of the original members have disappeared, and at least three of the very early posters, who had also become real-life friends--raeban, johna and NathanDetroit--have all passed on. Somehow, we knew.

I grieve their passing just as much as I do that of people with whom I went to high school. I even grieve the passing of BartWatson, whom I did not know in person.

If we miss a poster friend or acquaintance, we will have to ask about them, just like in real life, "What ever happened to..............?" Just like in real life, people may or may not know the answer.
