Revisiting the 100 post minimum rule

IT appears to me that many users are making a total farce out of this. There is one poster I noticed today that joined July 27, made a few reasonable posts and now has 75 posts in the last 24 hours that say "thanks for the information".

Since we obviously cant say 100 posts with usable content ( I dont think we use AI on this bulletin board ) , I think in some ways we were better off with users posting on CC with 1 and 2 posts - at least it did not give the "confidence level" to others that this was actually a contributing member of FT that the 100 posts might imply

MY 2 cents (US no less )

But how common is this?

Yes, I've seen a few examples of single-word, or very short, posts, that looked like just an attempt to get to the 100-post milestone. I.e., the poster had fewer than 100 and nearly all his/her posts were like that.

However, is this really THAT common?

I love reading some of these subjects. I find it a bit ironic that the use of this tactic is akin to getting some FF miles buy the use of any means.

It doesn't seem rampant (getting 100 post by the use of short but frequent messages) so I doubt it will become a problem.

Just MY 2 cents (In Euros, please! @:-) )

Jan-Az ... I am no expert, but it seems like a very isolated issue?

Perhaps Randy figures that a couple of folks like this, gaming the system is better than an army of just-signed-on political/gay/religious activists in OMNI, or teenage freebie hunters/conga kings in SPAM etc, hence his initial call.

I imagine the person you are referring to is the same one skofarrell and I posted abut here?

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showp...7&postcount=16

Perhaps if someone politely PMs him/her advising this activity has been noted, it may stop? I disabled my PM facility from day #1, and this member has no email access.

As I posted he/she does IMHO seem to have some very useful input on a number of airline Forums when the post chase activity is disregarded.

Ooops - appears those posts are no longer with us? The 2 links I added yesterday go nowhere. Anyway, this kind of thing seems to be tactic #2 if it is the same member we are talking of:

ozstamps, I think the search ID function only works for the person that did the search, and only while that session is still active .

This is really no different than the people who make posts that have nothing but ^ in them.

The only reason this person is more obvious is that it is happening in the span of 24 hours.

I think this is an isolated problem... perhaps we should add something to TOS that says that a person will be suspended if they do that.

Even though I mentioned early on that I felt this 100 minimum rule would lead to some marathon posting in other forums, I still stand by the 100 minimum rule.

I wonder if it's the same person I noticed and mentioned here in my post #17

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=331463

The work was successful, even with the deletion of posts in discontinued fora, s/he made to 100 last night by posting non-sense.

I wonder where they REALLY want to go? I'm betting on Omni.

Mary

Anyone want another experts opinion?

When I first came to Flyertalk in Sept 2000 it was hard enough keeping up with the forums that I was interested in ie United, Starwood, and eventually Community.

As we all remember, it takes a lot of reading and even some courage till work up till you first post. The posts come slowly. In some cases they pick up speed, and in other cases, long time posters have very low post counts.

In any event, it takes some time. That's time to master the managing of Miles and Points. I don't even remember how long it took me to discover Omni; let alone spam. Coupon Connection was another story.

So while I disagree with the thread starter (sorry Jan) I have to say that new posters have to pay their dues so to speak.

Sorry if some of you disagree.

Thought about a smiley face reply

Or even a one word answer...... AGREE.....

However, that would not be in the spirit that I choose to participate when I do post.

As a long time member of FT and even earlier lurker. with a reasonably low Post Count given my length of time, I see no issues with a min threshold to post/do/participate in certain aspects of FT.

Certainly there will be people who try to game the system, (don't alot of FTers spend alot of time figuring out how to game other systems). As long as they are within the Terms and Conditions (or in our case TOS) it should be fair game.

Perhaps we will over time want to adjust the TOS to not allow for this, but if it is isolated then do we really care? These people are figuring out how to game a system and if they want in that badly they probably have something to add about something we might care about.

I never noticed Admin went and deleted all those posts like "kjgjtriusjfuz" in the disused airline forums. So that set the poster back at zero I guess? ^

Yes I think we are thinking of the same member - and if not this person posted a ton to the old airline forums with nonsense, to end up on 102 posts, so you'll soon see where he/she really wants to post:

Well, if there is an award for the most posts in the most different forums - 5 posts, in 5 forums, in 5 minutes, would surely have to take the prize? @:-)
