Question Question about Continent of Origin - OneWorld Explorer

Hey everyone,

Regarding OneWorld Exp. When i depart continent of origin (LHR) and then returning to the continent at the end of trip am i allowed the 4 flights within the continent? How many stop overs are allowed?

This is covered in the sticky, but yes you can use the 4 segments at the end of the trip PROVIDED once you hit the country of origin (e.g. LHR) you can't leave that country again.

When they say you are allowed to take four "flights" to explore each continent, does that mean four "flight segments" to explore each continent?

Yes. If you take a "segment" with more than one "sector" (i.e., more than one take off and one landing) using the same flight number (on the same day; i.e., without a stopover), then that counts as one "flight" against the four that are allowed to explore the continent. For example, CX751 HKG-BOM makes a stop in BKK (and continues on to DXB on the same flight number, but that's a different continent according to oneworld). There are two "sectors" (HKG-BKK and BKK-BOM), but only one "segment," so this would only count as one "flight." You also only get the miles between the endpoints of the "segment," not the combined miles of the two "sectors." 2,677 base miles, in the case of HKG-BOM.

As you are only allowed to leave the country of orgin once, the 4 flights would have to be in the UK if you go into LHR from another continent. These 4 flights are still in the "continent" (but would be in the country of origin). However only 2 stopover allowed in continent of origin. If you into fly into, for example FRA from USA, you have 4 segments (2 stopovers) in Eu before going back to the UK (any airport).

I think you are confusing "segments" with "sectors". The sticky explains the difference.

Yes, I was. Sorry about that. I have corrected my earlier post to use the proper terms. Thanks for pointing this out.


The terminology can be a bit confusing. The FAQ for this forum uses "segment" and "sector" and is consistent in its use of these terms, so that's quite helpful.

The oneworld PDF and oneworld Timetables application refer to "flights" (e.g., up to four flights to explore each of the other continents) and "flight segments" (e.g., up to 20 flight segments on your trip), and does not use the term "sector."

The rules from CX in the Excel file linked from the FAQ do use the term "sector, " but, oddly enough, appear to be using it differently. For example, in section C of Part I, the rules state Max 4 sectors and Max 6 sectors (for North America).

I've always thought of a "flight" as a trip on the same flight number, and a "flight segment" as one take off and one landing for "direct flights" with an intermediate stop, but if I'm going to post here, I need to learn and use the proper terminology to avoid creating confusion.
