MEL-NRT
will get you more miles. And for QF MEL-NRT is over 5000 miles so get more status credits which is what gets you to next QF FF level
As said above, to maximise OWE miles (and QF status credit) its best to go from the extreme (eg east) in one continent to the extreme (eg west) in the next. That is for example JFK-SYD, and not LAX-SYD (for NA to SWP), SFO-ZRH and not JFK-LHR (for NA to Europe), MEL-NRT and not SYD-NRT (for SWP-Asia). Also the same within a continent
You can also transit thru NA. So that LHR-EZE for example can be done as LHR-LAX-EZE
You can also have ground sectors, so that you can maximise the long trips.
This post One World Distances has a list of some direct flights that exist (or did exist at that time it was done). These are flights with a single flight number. They may go via several airports.. Some even require a change of aircraft, like, MIA-NRT on AA, but they are a single flight number, which is the important thing
Flights between destinations are being changed every day so you need to check.
Also Simple list of BA destination. This list will not be up to date

Thank you very much. Unfortunately, number6, I will fly most segments in August each year, so I cannot use your two year trick on QF! Thanks for your advice.

Finnair has a Plus program which top tier levels are valid for 2 years (emerald and sapphire) so via their program it's fairly easy to get status in OW for 2 years with one AONE, or even DONE, ticket.

Oh my,
I once flew Finnair DUS-HEL and even applied for a membership, then about 3 years later I threw the card away. My fault! Triple miles in F. How does their award chart look like ? And a problem is award availability I guess. Because I really do not want to fly with them but rather BA, CX or QF!

Never booked any OW awards via AY but have had pretty good luck atleast with their own award flight/upgrade availability. Please consult www.finnair.com for their award chart, it also lists all awards with any other OW carrier using AY FF points.

flamboyant 1, few notes I should mention about Finnair Plus:
When you start piling up points from scratch, you've got to go through each tier level, you cannot jump straight to the top. So first 60k points, which equals 20.000km flying in intercont. F, gets you to OW Ruby. Then the count is again back to zero and next 120k points (40.000km in F) will put you to OW Sapphire. Then once again back to zero and next 300k points will finally give OW Emerald. So taking this into account, it might be difficult to reach Emerald with one AONE if starting from scratch, would require, with quick calculation around 160.000km of flying in F, also remember what mentioned earlier that even if you got F ticket, and only J service is offered, you will get credited as flying in J. Sapphire & Emerald status are both valid for 2 years. For Ruby and Sapphire you've 12months to collect the required points, for Emerald (after you've reached Sapphire) you have 24months to collect the 300k points. Also, with every level, atleast 4 oneway flights must be on AY metal. I think this might be a deciding factor against AY in you case?
Cheers
