Yes you are entitled to it - see link below and selected AA Gold to see your benefits:

Check-in at the J counter yes, but I'm you shouldn't have had priority baggage tages. I guess the check-in clerk did it out of force of habit.

Here are my experiences from a RTW in March, when check-in as a Finnair Silver/OW Ruby for Y class:
- Finnair @ HEL and CDG: priority tag given occasionaly
- Qantas @ DRW and SYD: no priority tag
- LAN Chile @ EZE: no priority tag
- BA @ MEX: "You're not allowed to use the J counter if you're flying Y, even if you're OW Ruby. But as there's no passenger waiting behind you, you won't have to change to the other line"

After a 3-year 'gestation' as a QFF Silver/OW Ruby, I share virtualtroy and JuPe's posts.

J check-in counters, yes, but priority tags, no. Of course, you'll get priority tags if you're travelling J or F.

One exception is BA (as noted), they don't seem to like Rubys polluting their J queues. At LHR, they always have a person at the entrance of the J queue to turn away people, including OW Ruby.

Can't say I ever had this experience of BA, even when QF Silver (OW Ruby). All check-in agents have the OW status sheet behind their counters so can't think why you should be turned away if you're entitled to use J counters.

Priority tags are definitely NOT the official benefit. Having said that, it's mostly up to the mood of the check-in agent. Using the J-counters would increase the chance, but you shouldn't expect it.

On the other hand, J-counters ARE the benefit of OW Ruby. If you are turned away from J-queue, perhaps show a print-out of OW benefit table.

In regards to LanChile, I've always had my AA Gold/OW Ruby status respected until a recent very negative experience. I reprint my email to LanChile sent 5 days ago which they still have not (or may never) respond to:

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Dear Sirs:

Two weeks ago, I had a very negative experience with your ground staff at LIM after previously having great experiences flying LanChile domestically and internationally where I recently even went out of my way to complete a long survey praising LanChile over the airline (oneworld partner American Airlines) where I currently accumulate my frequent flyer miles.

According to information from oneworld, your own frequent flyer program describing your Premium (oneworld Ruby) level and American Airlines, Ruby members are allowed to use the Business class counter for check in.

On the evening of August 3rd at LIM, this was not only denied to me but done in a rude and condescending manner with the remark that "we no longer honor that card" when showing my AAdvantage Gold/Ruby card to calling another staff member over to explain the "new" policy with me despite the sign saying Premium (Ruby) level members could use that line. I did argue that this was in violation of the oneworld benefits rules and that even their sign permitted their oneworld Ruby level to use that line and the agent's response to that was to say that there was a new sign and to then take his time going back behind the counter to get and replace the sign while the very long regular check in line continued to grow.

Please clarify your current policy by answering two questions:

(1) Can oneworld Ruby members of partner airlines use the LanChile business counter or not?
(2) Can oneworld Ruby members of partner airlines use the LanChile preferred boarding line or not?

If you still follow the benefits rules for Ruby as outlined by oneworld, could you send to me on your corporate letterhead the official Lan Chile policy for each of these two areas to show to uninformed ground staff when necessary?

Sincerely,

Viajero Perpetuo</font>

Viajero - very sorry to hear of your negative experience with Lan Chile, they're usually the model of good manners and efficiency. Make sure you post the response you get...

I realize this post was made back in '03 and hesitate to resurrect an old thread, but am thinking that FT'ers probably prefer resurrection to new threads created because the search tool was ignored

I'm wondering (1) if there was ever a follow-up to your situation and (2) if anybody else has had troubles checking in at the J counter as a OW Ruby in recent years, seeing as priority check-in seems to be the sole advantage of Ruby status?

Could be just CX being nice as usual. I recently flew J but was able to checkin at F (Emerald status) and the CX agent applied F baggage tags and not the J tags.
Priority baggage isn't a feature of OW at all is it? This is one of the diffs I can see between OW & Star

I can confirm that CX systemwide will give Ruby Priority Baggage tags.
@ SIN the annoying BA/QF premium checkin counters are not for Rubys

You are entitled to use the F checkin (even when flying Y Class) because you are Emerald - EXP AA.

On the topic of Oneworld Priority tags, do they actually exist? (like the Star Orange tags?)
