Comair, BA's related carrier, operates only between CPT, JNB and DUR, and into Victoria Falls and Windhoek. Otherwise, flights originate in London and cover a few major capital cities of former colonies. SAA used to have a marketing agreement with AA, but left for one with DL. Also has agreements with LH and Varig in STAR, and several other carriers.
Safety has been a prime consideration of the oneworld and STAR partners, and it is considered not many carriers not included meet their standards.
I also suspect the long time rivalry in the Pacific between CX and JL may also have something to do with the latter's not being all that welcomed.

Shareholder,
You neglect to mention that BA now also has a north African affiliate operating under the BA colors - Regional Air - based out of Kenya. They fly from NBO to Asmara, in Eritrea; Djibouti, Djibouti; Harare, Zimbabwe; Khartoum, Sudan; Lusaka, Zambia, and Mombasa, Kenya.
Also, if I'm not mistaken, BA also operate mainline service between NBO and Mauritius.

As well as SEZ-NBO. I don't remember when, but BA will be dropping the NBO connection to MRU at some point and just run more non-stops. Looks like maybe the change is November 1st.
Off topic, but if anyone has been to either SEZ or MRU, what should I expect the prices to be like? Are they more like SE Asia or like the Carribean?

Darren,
Mauritius is off-the-wall expensive, but it is very, very beautiful. Expect to spend $350-400 a night for a good hotel. It mostly a honeymoon destination. If you're going on business, stay near Port Louis, otherwise I can highly recommend Le Tousserok Hotel on the opposite side of the island. It has great beaches and its own private island. Takes about 75 minutes by taxi (about $55) from the airport. In terms of getting to the island, avoid Air Mauritius. Even in C, their service is poor, at best. If you have the option, take Singapore or South African.

Thanks, OWD.
I would take BA, actually, from London. You say that it is off-the-wall expensive, which I admit that I would also consider $400 a night to be. I think I need to look closer at a Lonely Planet or a book like it, and see if there are some cheaper homestays or something. If not, maybe I can just sleep out on the beach...

Safety is a most important issue, but a lot of airlines in europe and asia have good records.
OW really does need to expand, at least by 2-3 airlines, otherwise it runs the risk of falling to third, if skyteam continues expanding.

I am all for OW to succeed but I am afraid that Star is already the winner and will continue to add more and more carriers

I disagree. Don't really think *A is interested in more carriers. Its pretty big as it is, and all indications from their media releases are that they've reached their optimum size.
Don't know what OW are doing, they're so secretive about those things. And their web site doesnt really tell you too much. See what happens.

Not that it amounts to a whole hill of beans, but I wonder if the new QANTAS discount carrier (Air Australia?) will form part of OW. If BA and GO are anything to judge by, probably not.

It will be called "Australian Airlines" and will be earning FF points for QF FF. So I suppose it will be an affiliate member of oneworld (like TWA's status).

Just wondering if or when DragonAir will upgrade their systems to join OW? I guess it's not likely in the current business environment. I'm planning a trip to Beijing next year and would really prefer CX & KA over an AA codeshare with Air China.

not any time soon for KA, though we all want it. you could put KA into Asiamile though (just mile, no tier with CX's MPO)
there are also discussion of CX flying to PEK/SHA, but these are all pretty long shots
JL is still the best bet at this moment (for their close relationship with AA), plus BR. but oneworld has made it very difficult for new airline to join

The Narita airport authority is now working on reassigning airlines at its terminals, hoping to move all Star Alliance carriers to Terminal 1 and oneworld airlines to Terminal 2. All Nippon, a Star carrier, is supposed to move to T1, while JL remains in T2. But this doesn't perhaps necessarily mean that JL is keen on integrating ground services with oneworld .... (CX and BA expressed reservations about moving from T1 to T2.)

I just flew NRT-JFK on JL in F and was sooo impressed. I had no idea that JL's first class had improved this much since I last took it two years ago; impressive cuisine and wine list as well as attentive service.
Now I really really wish JL would get real with the world and join OW!!! instead of having such flirtatious relationships that do not lead to any Q miles with anybody else.
Com'n JL, its an opportune time to join OW now that the relative dominance of AA and BA
has lessened in the current turmoil of the industry. JL can have a better leverage than ever with OW if if decides to join now, IMHO.
