Great reports! Taking Lan Chile on OW RTW F
in October. Was wondering about sticking
with Lan Chile. Will keep those flights and
seats.

I am planning a trip to SCL on sat may 24 on aa through DFW. We arrive at 7:55am. I have found an inexpensive punta arenas fare on the lanchile website that leaves at 9am the same day. Assuming that we arrive on time, is 65 minutes sufficient to clear customs and go to the domestic terminal (which i understand is separate from the newer international terminal)? I realize it is a close shave, but the fare doubles if I leave the following day.
thanks

It can get busy in SCL in the mornings when lots of US flights arrive, you will also need to pay the $50/$60 or whatever it is reciprocity fee before going through immigration. The airport is pretty small though (they were expanding it the last time I was there) and it's an easy walk to the domestic terminal. 65 miniutes should be doable.

Last I heard, the reciprocity is $62, payable in USD.

65 minutes should be fine. SCL is a pretty efficient airport, and they generally won't give a hassle. Just make sure to stop at the reciprocity booth first, to the right before immigration.

The domestic terminal isn't seperate, it is on the other side. You will have to exit immigration, go upstairs, and it is on the right hand side of the ticket counters.

the reciprocity fee is appearently good as long as you have your passport. it is posted in your passport. i didn't need to pay again this jan because we had been there a few yrs ago.

perhaps, if one were going to travel to chile a lot, getting a new 10 yr passport might make sense.

They bill it as being good for life. What it looks like now is a paper that is stapled to the last page. Even if it isn't good for life, just undo it and staple it to the new one.

I got lucky, in 1998 the fee was only $25, but only said good for the life of the passport.. (my first time there, I arrived overland from Bolivia, and didn't have to pay the fee). I just recently renewed the passport and wondered if I could just reattach But I think they would look for previous entry stamps.

There would be no reason for them to, unless the stamp is dated. I am pretty sure mine isnt. Anyway, you get it before your first trip through immigration, so at least for one use, you wont have an entry stamp for chile.

Look underneath the stapled paper, there is a special stamp which is not an entry stamp. (At least there is on both my old and new passports.)

The paper I received in February 2001 states that it is only good for the life of the passport, and is stamped with the entry date. The same stamp was also applied to my passport directly underneath the ares in which the paper was stapled.
