OWE: Rerouting at checkin without reissuing tckt?

Suppose I've got an AOWE3 ticket, and the first legs are BOS-DFW-LAX. The ticket was written with a connection in DFW so that I can take a transcontinental non-stop later in the trip.

Now suppose I show up at Logan for the BOS-DFW flight, and a seat is available on a BOS-LAX non-stop. Would the check-in agent be able to put me on that BOS-LAX flight without reissuing the whole ticket?

(I know, it's heresy here to even think of a routing that yields fewer miles & points, but I've got a rebel heart.)

I have had this happen to me before with success. The agent will most likely allow it and simply take the two coupons and give you a boarding pass on the non-stop. For even better chance of success, if you can, try checking in for the flight at the gate (they have much more discretion).

Last year, a CP check-in agent kindly told me she could give me a non-stop flight to my destination. I was on a DONEW3 ticket. If I remember the routing correctly, it was something like YYZ-YOW-RDU. She thus offered me a YYZ-RDU option.

I had to decline as I wanted one segment for my bonus mile promotion.

Yes, I have experienced that before. They just take your two ticket coupons for the direct flight.

would this still happen if you had already taken your 1 transcontinental flight?

I would think most probably the record of your 1st transcon will be gone from your PNR by the time you check in. I highly doubt the agent would care. (They could dig into the history but I don't think that's what they would typically do.) And most likely, regular agents would not be aware of this '2 transcons not allowed' rule for the RWT.
