Iberia agents CAN be helpful

I just got off the line with Iberia after putting my ff numbers on their segments for my rtw ticket and I had to share this story with all the rest of you 100k maniacs.

A very nice guy took my call and I gave him the reference number for our flights and told him I wanted to put one flight on my BA ff number and the other on my CP. There was the usual pause (remember I'd already called AA, CP, CX, BA and QF) and he said, of course we can do that. He pulled up the file and started entering the information and suddenly he said to me, "Can I ask why you want to do this?" So I told him all about the 100k bonus promo and how I was going to wind up with 3 100k bonuses after this trip was done.

He started laughing and said he had been so surprised when I asked for this because he had just gotten off the phone with a guy who had asked for the same thing except he wanted to credit 4 legs to 4 different airlines. The guy at Iberia said the poor man was furious because this was his second call and the first time he was told he couldn't do this. He was afraid to ask him why he wanted the segments that way because the man was so mad. He was very happy to get an explanation for this segment madness.

Okay, my question now is: Which one of you was the guy who had to call twice? I can't believe it was someone who just decided to put miles on 4 different airlines. It had to be someone from FT who knew about the 100k. Or am I just assuming that the only mileage nuts in the world are people here at FT?

Well, back to my packing. I start out Saturday and I'm in the midst of making lists and losing them.

Chrism,

It wasn't me, I swear. But I have a few questions.

What's the phone number you called? Just the US Iberia reservations number in NY? Can you post the 1-800 number for reservations and Iberia Plus if that's what you used.

Did you discuss eligible fare codes at all? I know you're on a RTW ticket so you're not too worried about this, but I have a few people asking. Reason is that I have spoken with both BA and AA to confirm mileage-eligible fare codes and the alignment of fare codes among the oneworld alliance carriers. BA and AA jibed fairly well (all fare codes eligible for miles except consolidator fares; L, O, Q, S, and the only fares eligible for tier points are; Y, B, H, K). I was wondering whether Iberia was up to speed on this or were they still highly restrictive to mostly full-economy fares?

By the way, I leave next wednesday for my 5-day trip.

I called the regular Iberia number 1-800-772-4642. Since I'm on a first class Oneworld RTW ticket I haven't been concerned with what classes are eligible. Sorry about that. I suggest you do what that other guy who couldn't get his flights done the way he wanted did. Call, if they don't seem to know what they're talking about, hang up and call back. You could also ask to be connected to Iberia's frequent flyer desk. I'm sure they at least must know what the 100k promo is all about and what is and isn't eligible.

Good luck.
