AirBerlin Baggage Policy

Hello Flyertalk,

I will be flying AirBerlin and was wondering if you could help me out. I have a hand full of flights over the next three months under two separate reservations, one booked through AA and one through BA, however all are AirBerlin flights. Both reservations were reward bookings. On one of my reservations it explicitly states in writing, I am allowed two pieces of luggage. On my other reservation I was verbally told I would be allowed just one piece of luggage. According to the BA website, the more generous baggage allowance it used.

I called AirBerlin to confirm my baggage allowance. The second time I called I was on the phone with them for 45 minutes. AirBerlin said it was such an unusual case they had to call another department. At the end of the call, they said I would have differing baggage allowances, one for the one reservation and two for the other.

Is there any way to be allowed the two baggage allowance complimentary? Does anyone know how strict are they at the airport? They said it is 150 euro charge to check a second bag. If I were to upgrade one part of my flight, would that increase the entire reservations baggage allowance?

Thanks!

Do you have status with a oneworld airline? What class are you traveling in?
ba.com routinely incorrectly states baggage allowances, especially with other airlines. More info can be found on the BA forum.

My dad, who booked the flight does have a status with AA. It is the most basic class.

Thanks.

Look up the BA booking using CheckMyTrip to bypass BA's possibly erroneous information:

www.checkmytrip.com

(Don't log-in/Register, just enter the booking PNR and surname at the top.)

How much baggage does that indicate when you click "View Details +" for each segment?

You link confirms the email, I am allowed two pieces on the BA AirBerlin flight. Thank you.

Is there any other way to be allowed 2 bags rather then one on the AA flight? Do you think they will be strict about it at the airport?

Purchase it through AB? http://www.airberlin.com/en-GB/site/...et_lid=6760031

You will need to get the AB PNR number.

Welcome to Flyertalk!
In my experience they may sometimes grant you some excess kilo's for one bag but you won't get away with checking an extra bag at no charge.

This specific question might be better answered in the AB forum.

EXTRA: IATA rules apply.
This is what IATA states:

IATA resolution 302 with the US DOT exemption, means the baggage allowance for the entire booking (including any return journey on the same ticket) will be that of the Marketing carrier for the first journey's international leg.

MSC IATA resolution 302 effect on QF
(Thanks to @serfty's post in another thread)

No I am confused - when you post "the AA flight?" do you mean you have a flight on AA?

This is different from the impression of "all are AirBerlin flights".

Did you really mean the AA booking?

Clarification here will help assist ...

Sounds like two bookings, one made with AA miles, one made with BA avios, but all only containing Air Berlin flights.

I agree, but this needs to be clear as it can have significant ramifications with IATA 302.

If all travel in on AB metal and none to/from the USA, it's AB baggage allowance that matters - nothing else (presuming the OP is not Emerald).

Correct, my first reservation was booked with AA miles for multiple AirBerlin flights and my second reservation was booked with BA avios for an additional AirBerlin flight. Sorry for the confusion.

Additionally my first flight is from the USA and my last flight is returning to the USA.

This is what applies to your flight. So it's the Marketing carrier's rules that apply. (AA & BA in this case)

U.S. Exception (US DOT Order 2009-9-20 <05Oct09>)(a) For passengers whose ultimate ticketed origin or destination is a U.S. point, the baggage provisions selected at the beginning of the itinerary shall apply throughout the itinerary, regardless of stopovers, and
(b) in the case of code-share flights that include a point in the United States, the Most Significant Carrier (MSC) shall be the Marketing Carrier.

You have still not provided enough information.

I presume it's all AB metal but are the flight numbers all AB, all AA or a mix of AB & AA?

Do both bookings have travel to/from the USA or just one of the bookings?

All of my flights are AirBerlin. I have a AA and a BA reservation # although, there is a corresponding AB reservation #.

Just the AA booking as to/from USA travel.

Hope that clears things up

It would be AB as they are AB flights.
