My apologies if there are threads that cover this, but I did not manage to fine any good solid advice. I'm needing some advice for my parents - who are not members of any airline program. They are flying LHR-HKG-SYD-AKL returning AKL-HKG-AKL. All sectors in Business Class with Cathay apart from SYD-AKL which is on AirNZ metal.

My parents are based in London, and I'd like to get advice on the best way for them to earn and subsequently redeem miles - this redemption would likely be on a European short haul out of London. I'm guessing they can either: Join Cathay program, and try and redeem on a Oneworld partner, or join a BA program, credit the miles to BA and redeem with BA.

Some advice would be greatly appreciated.

Credit the miles to BA and redeem with BA.
But check how manly miles/tier points you get with BA, Cathay & AA

Flying LHR-HKG-AKL on Cathay would have been simpler

Thanks - they are flying that route as they have friends in Sydney. I'll see if I can sign them up to BA.

Consider AA's program as well!

I stuck with BA when i moved to Hong Kong, despite flying Cathay almost exclusively now. BA is easier to earn status on providing you dont fly deep discount economy and you can manage the 4 flights per year on BA metal requirement.

For accumulating and using Avios/Asiamiles, given that your parents are London based they will probably find it easier to find redemptions with Avios.

Third point - Cathay inexplicably charge US$50 to join the Marco Polo Club.

CX's programme to earn elite status is the MPC. But to join Asia Miles is free. And a quick note to Asia Miles stating said reservation may get the fee waived.

Asia Miles do expire after 4 years. So best if maybe BA miles (AVIOS) if within EU is all they want to redeem.

3~4 years depending on when the miles get creditted.
