Worst case scenario - you could reroute to LAX and ground transportation to ONT.

I am flying out from DFW to ONT on July 3, connecting through MSP. I am taking the last flight of the day out of MSP to ONT, and was wondering what were my chances of not getting out. The flight numbers are NW 1487 and NW 1029, and both are oversold right now. I do have seats assigned to me right now, but beyond that I am worried that a "delay" will get me bumped off the flight. I do not have much experience with NW, but I know United is bad about consolidating flights at the end of the day, and blaming it on some unrelated storm 1000 miles away. Any help would be appreciated.</font>

I have seen the asking-for-volunteers crawl up at departure from SEA about three times in the last year, but there's generally no shortage of volunteers, so if you really want to get on, you're getting on.
This is NOTHING like United... when the United Shuttle was still a going concern here on the left coast... where on half my trips I would be handed a DM (Departure Management) card at check-in instead of a boarding pass. The flights were so grossly oversold and mismanaged that they'd only confirm seats for UA elites until 15 minutes before departure.
NW is different -- have a good trip.

I definately agree that your chances of having a problem based on the flight being oversold are very small. I would guess that flights the night before a holiday will be half or less business travelers (I don't know many that want to travel late the night before a holiday) and more than half leisure travelers (I tried to book GRR-SFO this night and was too full to get a reasonable fare so ended up flying early Jul 4). There never seems to be a problem finding volunteers when there are a lot of leisure travelers on a flight. Also I agree that NWA seems to really have improved their yield management. I have been on several flights where the gate agent tells me it is overbooked, only to leave with a few standby's clearing.

The number one thing IMO that improved 'yield management' for airlines was to increase the amount of time required for checking in.

Be sure and check in using nwa.com check-in so that you will have printed boarding passes (with seat assignments) in your hand when you arrive at the airport.
This will also speed up your time at the ticket counter (if you have luggage to check) or if you are using a rollerbag and not checking anything, just walk to the checkpoint and continue on to the nwa gate.
You really only need to be at the airport 35 minutes before departure if you are not checking luggage and have used nwa.com checkin.
Good luck!

Again, check in at nwa.com and change your seat online before printing your BPs.

I'm sorry to say I will be out flying on July 3rd, so I will not be able to monitor the progress of these two flights. (Actually, I am not sorry to say that.)
Can someone monitor the flights and post the on-time performance on this thread? Maybe someone can give us a headcount (percentage full) report also.
