The one and only time I got invol'd by NW was at MSY in, ah, 1988. So that's ancient history.
I have seen the asking-for-volunteers crawl up at departure from SEA about three times in the last year, but there's generally no shortage of volunteers, so if you really want to get on, you're getting on.
This is NOTHING like United... when the United Shuttle was still a going concern here on the left coast... where on half my trips I would be handed a DM (Departure Management) card at check-in instead of a boarding pass. The flights were so grossly oversold and mismanaged that they'd only confirm seats for UA elites until 15 minutes before departure.
NW is different -- have a good trip.
