Upper or Lower Deck on 744
Greetings,
I have 2 award seats booked for a return flight NRT - JFK in WBC. Currently I have the 2 seats upstairs. Since I have never flown on the upper deck of a 747, what is the general consensus on flying up or down in WBC?
All comments and thoughts appreciated...

I'd like to know, too. I'll be flying BKK-NRT-JFK next month in WBC, upstairs, on my way back from a month-long trek in Nepal. I'll need some TLC!

I concur with magic111 and thezipper. These are the former first class seats.

Ditto on this, always have seat 1B on the 744 on my transpacs, on the 742, upstairs 86B
Just curious, why 86B? I have 85B reserved for the SEA-NRT and return segments (1B for the NRT-BKK and return). Should I change to 86B?

If you fly more than once a month you might want to sit downstairs---far less radiation exposure.

Thanks for all the replies guys.
Seems to me this boils down to personal preference and not really any tangible factor (i.e. different seats, level of service, noise, space, etc..)

I think that you'll find any seat on the upper deck of NW's 747-200s to have more than enough room. On my trip back from Europe this summer I sat in 85J and couldn't have touched the bulkhead in front of my seat without standing up to do so. Though I do prefer the window seats on the upper deck as it is next to the carryon storage bin under the windows--there is no overhead storage up there, so if you're in a aisle seat and want to get at your stuff you'll have to reach over the person in the window seat. There is enough room in 85K to get out of your seat when 85J is fully reclined.

On a 744 or a combi I actually prefer the 2nd cabin on the first floor of WBC....it is less crowded and I can get more sleep.
Upstairs is nice, but the bins are smaller and seems a bit more cramped.
I've never flown on a 742 though, I've heard the upstairs seats are better.
