Isn't the reason Chinese airport security smell the open bottles related to no alcohol being allowed through the security checkpoint?

My bottles of water seem to have gone through without issue at PVG and BJS.

Rules being updated

New rules:

http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/060813/nysu012.html?.v=67

http://www.tsa.gov/press/releases/20..._08132006.shtm

The most significant changes to the security measures include mandatory shoe screening for all travelers and the admission of up to 4 oz. of non- prescription medicine.

So we'll be buying our contact saline in 4 oz increments...

I don't think eyedrops and saline are allowed even if less than 4 oz.

Of course, allowed or not, they go undetected in your pocket anyway.

Prohibited:

Gel deodorants (solid stick is permitted)
Liquid medications (up to 4 oz.of non-essential)
Liquid soaps (bar soap is permitted)
Saline solutions

Last I checked, saline is a liquid medication.

Camelbaks, similar backpacks and water bottles must be empty

Water bottles are permitted!!!

Gel based sports supplements

Anyone know if a PowerBar is "gel based"?

Baby teethers (with gel or liquid inside)
Childrens toys with gel inside

I'm a process-driven, detail-oriented traveller... but this is getting confusing (and tedious!).

My guess is Power Bar/Clif Bar, etc. are "solid", and that "gel based sports supplements" refers to products such as GU, ClifShot, etc. I have Clif bars packed in my carry-on for tomorrow, so I'll see how that goes.

I'm not sure that I agree that saline solution falls under the definition of medicine. In any event, rules seemed to have changed again:

Saline solution - You are allowed to carry up to 4 oz., of eye drops with you. Volumes greater than 4 oz., are only permitted in your checked baggage
so you are now ok to take the bottle out of your pocket and put it in your bag. Just leave the chapstick, deodorant, liquid sanitizer, gel inserts for your shoes, etc., in your pocket.

After all this, I'm starting to think my brain may be gel based.

I just want to clarify something -- If my wife, a doc, were to write me a prescription for gel shoe inserts and contact solution for herself or whatever else OTC, they would allow us to carry it on? Is that all it's gonna take?

peace,
~Ben~

Don't let her see what you wrote!!!
Can you write a prescription for something that is OTC? Or would it just be a doctor's note saying that it was medically necessary? Don't know if that would appease the TSA or not.

A doctor can prescribe OTC medications and treatments. I know this because you can save money sometimes by asking your doctor for a prescription for over the counter medication since some prescription plans cover all medication that is ordered and purchased under a doctors directions even if it doesnt require a prescription to purchase. Also, pre-tax medical spending accounts may or may not reimburse for over the counter medications without a doctors order/prescription. My understanding is that a "note" is fundamentally and technically different in hospital parlance, but she's always telling me that I mix this stuff up, so YMMV.

peace,
~Ben~

Edited to add: Not that the TSA won't make whatever up when we get to the checkpoint anyway...

"A senior congressional source said it's believed"

Please! Somebody, who is not even willing to give their name and take some responsibility for what they are feeding to the media than I say (based on many, many, similar situations, where bits of the actual truth squeak out later ) this is all a bunch of B.S.. The more emotional (afraid) they can make the underclass, the less able they (we) are to think clearly.

What sacrifices do you think our rulers are making? The idea that any of this nonsense is making anybody any safer is insane. I am willing to sacrifice when ,what is being asked is logical. I don't like what it says about us , that we are willing to put up with whatever we are told, whether it is sensible or not.
