missing last leg
Are there any repercussions if you miss the last leg of a return trip? A friend is returning on her father's 87th birthday. He lives in MSP. If she didn't complete the last leg so she could celebrate his birthday with him, would anything happen? She will have checked luggage that her travelling companions would be able to retrieve at the final destination.
Do they match the boarding passes with the checked luggage?
I think this has probably been addressed previously, but I couldn't find any info in my search.

Skipping out on the last segment is a very bad idea if you have checked luggage. The flight could be delayed while your luggage is removed. Doug would be very unhappy with you, even though it's what the customer wants.
If you don't have any luggage checked and skip the last segment just this one time, technically you're not supposed to but I doubt NW would do anything. You pays your money and you takes your chances.
A few years ago Delta's infamous RPU (Revenue Protection Unit) was known to recalculate fares & charge credit cards for one-way fares in similar circumstances.

You're bags will be removed from the flight and well, not sure exactly what would happen but not likely a good situation. I'd advise against it all.

Don't check any luggage
This is against the airlines rules, but in reality you will probably not have any repercussions from NW if you don't fly the last leg.
The only critical issue is to be sure and carry on all of your luggage, or send it home via FEDEX or UPS if you have too much to carry on the a/c.
Good Luck!

I think it should be OK. Most people say that this is not possible if you have checked luggage - as the airline will take it on to its final destination, but in reality, they won't because of security hazards. If you "miss" you flight and tou are on a restricted ticket that final coupon should become void and you can end your jouney in MSP. However, if the agent catches on, they may decide to wack you with the fare difference... although I can't imagine anyone agreeing and paying up since their journey has ended.

I talked to my friend and she decided she will no longer consider cutting out before the last leg--she will celebrate with her father the next weekend. Under normal circumstances, she would not even consider this. Her mother died a couple weeks ago and she thought it would be good if she could be with her father on his 87th birthday to provide emotional support.
Thanks for your responses.

Because sometimes roundtrip fare is cheaper than one-way fare, I just buy roundtrip and fly one-way. No problem at all. This is, however, a different situation than the one described in the OP.

".. She will have checked luggage that her travelling companions would be able to retrieve at the final destination. "
Sooo... the companions check-in that/those items as their own. She goes carry-on only. Problem solved.
(Obvious ?)
