Dc-10 Dtw-ams

I was just able to snag a RT award ticket to AMS leaving 9/30 and returning 10/5 NW outbound in coach and DL returning in business.

Outbound is NW #36 I have seat 13-B and the window seat next to me is currently empty.

I've never flown on a DC-10.........should I just blow my brains out now?

But seriously, is it as bad as I've read? I've done coach on a US 767 to AMS and it was tolerable. I might just consider several martinis at the Westin with one of "mother's little helpers" and hopefully sleep the whole way.

Given your sleep-focused strategy, its not so bad. The plane is old and heavy, and in my experience, gives a few less rattles with light turbulence. I'd suggest taking the sleepy once at cruising altitude - a pre-departure mechanical delay could make for a harrowing waking life experience.

Search for DC10 and you will find all sorts of opinions. Most positive.

It's coach, window seats with someone next to you (ie. only one seat between you and the aisle). Usual service in regards to food. Movies are shown onto a screen in front of your section (no individual screens, but then you will have room under the seat in fornt of you). Most -10s have clean/updated interiors with a retro feel to them. What I always find nice is that the window is huge!

If you fly coach, the DC10 is quite tolerable. It is coach afterall. VOD would be nice...

I've always liked them -- though if the window seat isn't empty I'd slide over during at least boarding -- just so no one bumps me.

The middle seat in the center is the pits though --

For now snag a window seat on the 2 side, but when you get to the gate, find out how full the flight is. I am flying out on the 27th, and I have noticed that there are a ton of available seats on all the last days of Sept. If the flight is fairly empty, ask the gate agent to block a few seats in the middle back - 3 is usually enough(though all 5 IS possible)- you will find the DC-10 to be great for sleeping if you can snag the middle with some room....
