I'm flying NW 4705 DTW-HSV a little later today, and just noticed that the gate assignment leaving DTW is A46C. Earlier it was A50C. It is a Pinnacle CRJ. The flight originates in TVC and is scheduled to arrive at C23.

Are they really parking CRJs at the A concourse or is this some temporary gate assignment that will change?

CRJ and Saabs have been parking from several A gates (the ones usually used by widebodies to Asia/Europe) for awhile now. They operate three simultaneous departures per gate.

Because of the C concourse construction (to make it better for the customer) half the gates were closed on that concourse. While the B concourse extention opened at the same time with 6 new gates, that still did not fill the void. Therefore NWA "loaned" Mesaba gates 46 and 50 on the A concourse for a hardstand operation. There are spots for 6 planes, both saabs and CRJs. These will be primarily for a/c that are international arrivals from Canada and then their subsequent flights onward from DTW. Expect this setup until sometime next summer when the new C concourse opens. Additionally, the avro is using gates 45 and 47 in addition to any of the B gates and gates 59, 61 and 63 on the A concourse.

In addition, CRJs are also used for international flights to Canada and will park at some of the international gates. Saabs also fly to Canada but park on the tarmac behind C terminal and passengers are bused to the international gates.

YXU - the setup that we have now is to eliminate bussing passengers from the C concourse to customs. That is why the planes at the A concourse will primarily be international arrivals and then their subsequent departure. The "even" side of the C concourse including the hardstand ramp area is closed nad under construction right now. They haven't wasted time tearing up the ramp and removing the jetways.

Thanks for all of the information. It was odd boarding from the ground between a Saab and A330 - just glad it was not raining.
