Is this a viable trip?

So wife and I are saving up our miles for a business class trip. Would like to head back to Asia in a few years ^ Almost there, figure another 90K or so. So here goes, we were wondering if this itinerary was possible and if not any suggestions? Trying to get as much for our bang as we can and see Japan, Malaysia, Thailand and fly back home via Singapore.

DTW-NRT
NRT-BKK
SIN-DTW

Any comments? Thanks in advance, as always you guys know it all when it comes to miles/points.

On an award, I'm pretty sure you'd have to arrange your own transportation BKK-SIN. But I think you can book the NRT stopover. I've certainly booked stopovers in AMS on trips beyond. But the nice part is that you will probably be able to find a good fare BKK-SIN on one of the Asian LCCs.

The rule for award tickets used to be either one stopover (more than 24 hours on an international flight) or an open jaw, but not both. Not sure if that restriction has changed recently.

On flights to/from Europe, you can schedule a mini-stopover in AMS by flying in one day and out the next, so long as you do not exceed the 24 hour limit. I am not familiar with the Asian schedules.

One stopover or open jaw is the rule. I'd suggest to have the stopover in NRT, then fly to SIN. From there you can go by bus to JHB (Johor Bahru in Malaysia - 1 hour trip) and get really cheap (like US$10) seats on Air Asia to anywhere in SE Asia. Air Asia flies from SIN also, but the flights are much more expensive (I found them to be triple the cost of those originating from JHB).

Air Asia is a LCC - no frills, no 1st class, but usually on-time, and really good looking FAs

The last time I checked the KUL-BKK, the cheapest fares were about $45 OW, with tax. Not bad, but not $10 either.

They do run very cheap fares to some Malaysian and Thai second tier cities.

I've flown on a 1/2 dozen Air Asia flights and have been pretty happy with them. If WN had flight attendants and service like that, I wouldn't mind flying them!

I must be very lucky! Before I booked my BWI-SYD trip, I was not very familiar with the stopover policy. I just called the GE line and told them my plan with stopovers(SIN~41hours, KUL~28hours and BKK~42hours). All the agents I spoke to did not mention the stopover rule and finally they did not charge me $5.00 ticketing fee . This trip involves MH segments, might this be the reason?

I paid RM 45 for a direct flight to Penang which is about $12 all taxes included (one way). But since this was an intra-Malaysia itinerary there were no intl departure/arrival taxes. My other flights on AirAsia were on walkup fares, at about US$80-US$100 per one way (international).

Yeah we were going overland at our own expense to get from BKK-SIN, just wondering (and hoping!) that this type of routing was viable. Again thanks all for your wonderful input!
