24 vs 36 hour check-in?

I just tried to check in and print out boarding passes 36 hours before my flight on Thursday morning, and saw that there is now only a 24 hour window. When did this happen, and why?

TSA is so inconsistent its ridiculous.
I printed out a Spirit Airlines boarding pass yesterday for someone, 3 days in advance.

Anyone know what the status is on the NW appeal for the 36 hour check-in?
