I am living right in the middle between Malmö and Helsingborg. I would definitely rather go to Helsingborg than to Malmö, do a ferry ride, drink a cheap beer on the ferry and visit "Holger the Dane" in the Kronenberg castle's catacombs. Of course you would do it the other way round (first the castle, then the ferry ride).
Also it is worth knowing that tickets are checked inside the ferry companies building before entering the gangway, but not on the boat or upon leaving. Furthermore you are not required to disembark from the ferry once you reached the other side of the Öresund. Reason is that there is a bar and a restaurant on the ferry so people often choose to stay and ride the ferry back and forth for a while on a single trip ticket which is kind of intended by the system. Then you should make up your mind on which side you want to leave and make sure to not leave accidentally on the wrong shore.
Third thing coming to my mind: There is the "Around the sound" 249 SEK round-trip ticket, which allows you to take the trains around the Öresund on both sides as much as you like as well as to cross the bridge once and to cross by ferry in the other direction. You can start wherever you like, you got two days for the travel and in my opinion this i a really nice offer. I did it last weekend with stops in Helsingborg, Helsingřr, at the Louisiana museum and "Křbenhavn". You need a full day to do that though and you can easily fill two days if you prefer.

More questions about Helsinborg/Bornholm/Tonder
I am bumping up an existing thread with more questions!
Spending one week in Denmark in late August. Plan to take the ferry to Helsinborg. We are interested in:
- where to stay in Helsinborg? Highlights not to be missed?
- cycling in Bornholm. Accommodation suggestions?
- my favorite folk singer (Eliza Gilkyson) is performing at Tonder Music Festival. Has anyone ever been (NB it is 3 hours west of Copenhagen).
Thanks in advance for any suggesitons!

As for sights in Helsingborg, it depends on what you are into. One idea is:
Sofiero castle, situated north of town, former summer quarters for King Gustav 6.e Adolf. You will find the castle small, with a large garden.
City center is small and walking friendly. A hill runs along the city, dividing it in a lower and upper part. "Upstairs" you will find the remains of the castle that controlled the narrow sound. Not much to see maybe, but a nice view. Also, there is a walk path alongside the ridge with many views. The walk path actually starts at Sofiero castle, but it is quite far to walk all the way.
Fredriksdal's gardens can be nice. It has a collection of "old houses", buildings that were saved from devastation when the city was renewed in modern times.
You could stay at Hotel Mollberg, situated on Stortorget "the big square".
Locally famous coffee maker Zoega dedicated a blend of his coffee to the establishment. His 1930's coffee grinders still runs at Drottninggatan 30 (Queen St), btw.
