Question for all the commuters

Hi,
I am in the process of interviewing for jobs. I live in the central Boston area (been here for a while). The position I applied and interviewed for, as I learn today, is being relocated in Merrimack, NH (versus S. Boston). This is approximately 57 miles north of central Boston. I had a bit of experience commuting to a position that was on the Boston beltway (128) which took approximately 1 hour each day (with roadwork and bad weather, it could take about 20-30 minutes longer).

I always though it's an advantage living in the city and having public transportation (albeit Boston is not an example of the perfect public transport system), so I am unsure as to what effect and how long this type of commute can take. 60 miles each way does seem a lot, and I just wanted to get other peoples feedback that commute everyday either in the New England area, or other areas. How much does this take out of your life?

I am not relocating to NH by any means.

Thanks

Depending on where you are in Boston, your probable route would be I-93 North to I-95/128 South to Route 3 North.

or if you live a little west, it would be Route 2 West to I-95/128 North to Route 3 North.

The worst part of either commute would be the I-95/Route 128 section. I-93, Route 2, and Route 3 you'd be a 'reverse commuter' and traffic shouldn't be too bad.

Where in Boston are you?

Brookline, MA near Coolidge Corner area.

To get to Burlington (where I once worked before), I found out that Storrow Drive (exit through BU-bridge) and 93N then 128W was much better than 1) Rt 9 direction Framingham then 128, 2) Route 3 via Cambridge and Alewife (shortest path) 2) I90 (Brighton Exit) to 128.

I assume that Storrow to 93N would still make more sense because 93N is usually quiet smooth. 128E or W is pretty bad during any point of the commute.

128S to Route 3 North is probably going to be quiet bad, I only had 3 exists to get off where I worked before (Burlington) and it was at least 20 minutes to get out.

It sounds like I-93 would be your best choice. Also since you are traveling all the way into New Hampshire, your other alternative could be I-93 North to I-495 South to Route 3 North. Taking I-495 would add a few miles to your commute but would probably take less time.
