my first SpaceBed experience
I just got off a 777-200 with SpaceBeds that brought me to JNB from SIN. Here is a recap of my experience.
The seat is very comfortable to sleep in, but sitting and eating/working is a little tricky. I was able to find a comfortable position to work on my laptop with, but a good eating position was impossible.
The electric controls are weird, and take time for you to understand them. Also, the massage function on the chair is a nice toy, but I think the one UA has on its C seats is better.
Another issue that you need to get accustomed to is the lack of personal space. I dont know if its only an optical illusion, but I felt that with the old Ultimo seats I had a little more distance between myself and the person seated next to me.
Also, when you use the seat in any sort of recline position, there is no space to put a bag or briefcase on the floor. This adds to the cramped feeling. I think that getting the seat blocked next to yours is a real plus.

Nice to here details.
Massage feature? I didn't think the SpaceBed was equipped.

Singapore_Air, you don't know much about SQ do you? You pretend to know but you lack the experience on flying SQ premium cabins.

Lack of experience in flying premium cabin on SQ does not mean necessarily the person knows less about the SpaceBeds. Some can read the information about to gain knowledge. Some can gain info from FT. Some can get to know the SpaceBeds from the Road Show.

Now that OWF has been put in its place.
Do explain this massage feature. I've never heard of the SpaceBeds having this.

Singapore_Air,
You are to be placed inside the SQ toilet and be locked from inside forever testing the sanitary napkins of all airlines - Singapore_Air, you are an "SQ Idiot".
For those not familar with this story then please read on via the following link:

Singapore_Air,
I am so surprised that you do not know your beloved airline's product - shame on you for asking others about it. This is just outrageous for someone who eats, breathes and masterb**es over SQ 24 hours, 7 days a week.
For your info, SpacePrams have a system called the "Lumbar Support" which is common on all airline seats in the premium cabins.
Conclusion: Singapore_Air, there is no need to get excited about the message feature on SpacePrams - this is nothing special only that it is a lumbar support unit.
Any money, Singapore_Air has contacted SQ's Public Relations department demanding an explanation about this feature on SpacePram and telling them that he is totally unimpressed by the lack of details available to consumers. I bet he is very unpopular with SQ. I bet they hate his guts just like others on airliners.net (namely Anzett).

The UA function is just fine.
You can live without this support.
OWF, stop it!
SQ Air, I did like your amazingly detailed trip report! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Thank you both kindly.

I wonder if you've played your last life and are about to get banned.
I hope so - you make some VERY good points at times, and then come in with some unnecessary vitriol.
(What are you trying to gain from this? That you have superior knowledge? OK, no worries - you have superior knowledge. We're indifferent.)
You have some serious issues to deal with, and I think it's time that FT stopped being your conduit...
Maybe a time-out will clear the air..
Apologies to Gaucho100K for extending this hijack...

Back on topic. Ive only tried the SpaceBed on a 777, so Im wondering if the personal space issue is as bad on a 744. Also, is there any noticable difference betweem upper deck and lower deck space for SpaceBed equipped aircraft? Thanks.

Gaucho,
I personally think the 777 with spacebeds have a little more space. That's because they lay em out 2-2-2 vs 2-3-2 on the old seats.
On the 744 it's still 2-3-2 on the main deck and 2-2 on the upper deck so apart from taking out one row upstairs and 4 seats downstairs, nothing much has changed. The aisles have (IMHO) become narrower. Having said that, there are a few nice cozy seats on the 744 which if you can score, are better than any spacebed seat on the 777.
In short the 777 spacebed seats are more homogeneous and less of a crap shoot if you don't know what seats to choose. On the 744, Get 17A or K and enjoy your flight. Get stuck with a E seat downstairs and you're screwed.
