Up in the Air: the FlyerTalker movie?

Anybody else heard of this movie coming out later this year?

Synopsis: From Jason Reitman, the Oscar nominated director of "Juno," comes a comedy called "Up in the Air" starring Oscar winner George Clooney as Ryan Bingham, a corporate hatchet man who loves his life on the road but is forced to fight for his job when his company downsizes its travel budget. He is required to spend more time at home just as he is on the cusp of a goal he's worked toward for years: reaching five million frequent flyer miles and just after he's met the frequent-traveler woman of his dreams.

Too bad I didn't like Thank You for Smoking. Can't say that I wanted to see Juno... :P

Wirelessly posted (HTC-P4600/1.2 Opera/9.50 (Windows NT 5.1; U; en) UP.Link/6.3.1.20.0)

could they have picked uglier airports than OMA and STL? is it supposed to be on american or a made up airline?

Does Clooney churn the Citi Aadvantage card in the movie?

....interesting.

Since it's supposed to be a comedy, I wonder how many TSA practices they'll incorporate into the film. ;)

Awesome thanks. Based upon the book "Up in the Air" by Walter Kim!

If his character is from NJ, I am sure we can come to some agreement for him to use my handle! ;)

you know, i've read the various synopses and some say "one million miles" while others say "five million miles." I wonder if the original was "one million," but they needed to up the ante for modern times and make it really out of this world. too many million milers out there to make a good story??

A good book and a quick read. Definitely recommended for the FT crowd. ^^

Why does he want to reach 5 million? Kind of a strange goal.
I just hope they get the facts right. I can already see all of us FTers rolling our eyes in the movie theater.

Spoiler alert - white text below; highlight to read more.

In the book he's basically on a quest for 1MM. I don't remember there being a real reason for it, but he's on that quest. Possibly a lifetime status, but I'm not positive. And at each turn something happens that prevents it. It is really just a fun-loving story. Not a lot of substance to it, other than the various travel things that always happen. As I recall, the airline is also trying to prevent him from hitting the magic number.

Did anyone read the comments on some of the cited articles?

"I want to be an actress and I can stay at my parents' house near STL. Can I be in your movie?"

Scary.

Scary for you, perhaps. She may be just perfect for Clooney! ;)

Anyway, sounds like an interesting premise. Will have to read the book.

Which FF program are they modeling? BIS miles or program miles? Or a more nebulous "flying miles" (including bonuses)?

BIS miles takes a loooooong time. I understand they give the equivalent of mid-tier elite status at 1 million BIS.

Fastest 1MM flying with bonuses was that Canadian who punched it all out with one "unlimited flying" pass in (as I recall) two months?

Fastest program miles accumulation I've heard of is 2MM in 7 days, by a guy who turned in 17 Marriott Rewards travel packages into 2.04 million miles!

Pudding Guy punched out 1MM program miles in AA within a couple months.

My own modest efforts did it more conventionally in a little under 16 months. (2MM coming early this May--a little under 24 months after 1MM).

Steve
