I have been with WAMU for several years (they purchased my previous mortgage co.)

I have been pleased with them, Until last year they offered a "no cost" refinance that was an interested rate a bit higher than the current rates, but they ate all the closing/refi costs. PLUS they gave you miles! I cleaned up on this by refinancing every 90 days - even if the rate was the SAME! By doing this was ableto ride the interest rate drop down for the past three years at no out of pocket cost!

Unfortuantely they now have a limit on the amount they will cover for the "no cost" refi.

To get the miles/points, you now must go through the correct call center (listed ont the website) - I preferred to deal with myaccount rep and actually left the miles on the table on my last refi just because my situation was a little complex and he had gotten used to it and knew what needed to be done.

Based on hearsay and Tom Martino's "troubleshooter" radio show, Washington Mutual is one of the worst companies to do business with.

Common complaints have included getting late charges because "they did not receive your payment" on time.

You should be so lucky as to just have them claim you are late. I know a guy who claims he didn't pay. He spent months trying to get them to look at the canceled checks that they had cashed showing his payments. Eventually they became rude and threatening and finally started forclosure proceedings against him. Ruined his credit rating and he couldn't even borrow the money to pay them off so that he could escape their evil clutches. Finally had to hire an attorney and sue them. Now they want more time and don't want him to proceed with the lawsuit. Gosh, where was the cooperation when he was trying to show them the canceled checks?
Just one of many stories I've heard about poor treatment at their hands.
They could offer me a million airmiles and I wouldn't do business with them. It's just not worth the hassle to have your credit ruined and have to fight with them.

How does one get hold of Tom Martino? I'm sure he would love to hear this guys story.

An almost identical story was in the Seattle PI some time ago.

Just to keep perspective on some of the comments here; Washington Mutual has grown very, very quickly in the past several years. Combine the challenge of integrating several different companies, cultures and systems with the unprecedented refinance boom and youre going to run into problems. Washington Mutual admits there were servicing and customer service issues and says theyre taking steps to improve.

Edited to add: Tom Martino's website. He also works with the Fox affiliate in Denver.
