I have some good insight about anything on the program that you wish to know, and I guarantee you that it is solid and reliable info. Only thing I ask in exchange is a good reference for lawyer for a possible lawsuit against AA for wrongful termination.
Let me know if you are interested.

I emailed a copy of my gold elite card without statements to diamond club two weeks ago. They matched me to Gold. Quick and easy. Well done BD.

Emirates just matched my LH SEN+BA Silver to Skywards Gold through Feb 2011. While logged into my Skywards Blue account, I sent off a query under the subject Skywards Tiers (or something like that) and the match request was forwarded to the London office. Gold kit arrived via Fedex in a couple of weeks. I did tell them who I worked for, and we do use EK as a preferred carrier for shorthaul out of our DXB office, so I don't know whether that made a difference.

nw radio silence
It's been about 4 weeks since I faxed my request for a match to NW, and nothing as yet (on-line account still showing as WP general member). What's the best way I should contact them to see where they are in the process?
many thanks,

Send them a note via the TTU link on nwa.com. TTU = talk to us. Click contact on the main page and then "Send an e-mail".

Mixed experiences
For where I fly, my only consistent options are US, UA, DL. Last year, flew US about 42k and got thoroughly fed up with the experience. Thought I would give AA a chance, completed the PLT challenge in the last 3 months of the year. Liked AA a lot but spent too much time on unreliable Eagle flights - and being stuck at ORD trying to get on one at all. Also did some DL/NW flying and thought it was ok, too.
Expecting more travel this year (maybe 100k), I figured the best plan would be to split between UA and DL, making mid-tier on each.
In early January, faxed off a copy of AA statement showing PLT with about 15k EQMs from the year-end challenge, to UA and NW, with a letter explaining flying history and expectations for 2009. Asked for a Gold match on NW and a 1P challenge on UA.
UA offered the challenge but I had a very unexpected blip in travel, with everything pushed back a month, so I ended up short of 15k with no time for mileage run activity. UA refused to extend the deadline, which was fine, but also refused to downshift to a 2P challenge. Their stance is to only offer a challenge to match the status submitted (AA PLT). I'll probably end up qualifying fine on double EQMs anyway but it's annoying to have a few flights as a GM again.
NW was quite another story. I received an e-mail back with a flat denial of a match. Then sent faxes, e-mails, and paper documentation back and forth for three months. Was finally matched to Silver.
Don't want to sound ungrateful but it's frustrating. I was hoping either DL or UA would rise to the top but I'm not in love with either.

However, I see this one as a relative freebie, since NW will cease to exist before long and that will still give me opportunity for delta down the road.

When you request a status match from another carrier, does that have any effect on your elite status with your current carrier?
I am doing 2 MR's on AA that will put me at PLT by the end of May. I currently live in the MSP area but will be relocating to DFW. That is why I chose AA.
In the meantime (once I hit PLT on AA) while I am still in MSP I am thinking about trying to get a match on NW. That way if I can not find a decent flight out of MSP on AA for a necessary trip, I would have elite status on NW as a backup.
Thoughts or suggestions?
Much appreciated.

Status matching will not have an effect on your current (earned) status. With regards to your particular circumstance -- not sure for how much longer NW will be matching status as an independent entity...but it's worth a shot. Note, however, that experiences of myself and others suggest it's quite a drawn out process.
good luck,
