Matt, the reason these issues are treated differently is control.
If you walk into a taxi with a drunk or stupid driver, you can ask him to stop and pull over.
You never even get to see the pilot, much less ask him to pull over to switch planes. You're totally out of control, and extending your faith into the system. When that faith is betrayed, it is much more emotionally firghtening than a car wreck.

Trying? What's the matter? You dont see the fireworks and animated family embroidered crest?
It must be your computer. The "educated, sophisticated" poster can see all of this...and my new suit.

I agree that it has to do with control. Also, I feel that somehow it would be more frightening to die that way. As in the case of the last major crash, the Swiss airline I believe it was, there were several minutes when the passengers must have known it was the end. Can you imagine the fear and trauma they must have felt?
One book that describes it well is "Fearless." This was also made into a movie, but the book is much better. The story starts off with a plane crash, and then focuses on the relationships between the survivors.

Control is one issue.
Another is that we have become inured to the day-to-day tragedies around us. We hear of the car crashes, etc., on such a frequent basis and we know, at least on some small level, that someone's world has abruptly changed.
When a plane goes down we feel differently because we've spent so danged much time in them ourselves -- we can relate to it on a more visceral level? Plus the tragedy is magnified by oh so many times. So many lives affected in an instant -- it somehow sinks into us much more deeply than the "regular" mayhem of modern life.
IMHO

Article began as "When Ken Hamer searches for air fares online, he knows it will take at least an hour to find the best deal. And that's if everything goes well." Other FT'ers mentioned is our own Ricechex!
