Matt, the reason these issues are treated differently is control.

If you walk into a taxi with a drunk or stupid driver, you can ask him to stop and pull over.

You never even get to see the pilot, much less ask him to pull over to switch planes. You're totally out of control, and extending your faith into the system. When that faith is betrayed, it is much more emotionally firghtening than a car wreck.
